I was wondering if it was dangerous to leave my Inspiron 1520 in a laptop case (Zeroshock III) while in sleep mode? Is there a possibility of it overheating and frying the motherboard etc...?

    Thanks

I would recommend using Hibernation mode instead as it actually turns the machine off saving the contents of the RAM in a file on the Hard drive.

I agree with Rene S your much better off with hibernate mode, with standby the computer isn't entirely off and could possibly overheat (I know my E1505's fans come on every once in a while while its in standby mode)

I've never had a problem with sleep mode creating undue heat, even in my carrying case (and the last time I used sleep mode was on my old, hot-running Inspiron 5100), but I would certainly echo the recommendation to use hibernate instead. It may take a bit longer to come out of hibernation than from standby/sleep mode, but it completely eliminates the risk of overheating.

I have an Inspiron 1520 with a case and I put it into sleep mode all the time while in it's case. It is always cooler when I take it out than before. As for overheating, I seriously doubt a laptop in sleep mode can generate enough heat even in a case to cause damage to components. If you ever feel your laptop while playing graphically intensive games, you will see that it can get very hot yet not burn out. I don't think sleep mode can produce that much heat.
Besides, if you have vista, your laptop will automatically switch to hibernation mode after a few hours (2-4, I think).

I have been doing this for years without any problems. Even put it though airport security and have it in sleep mode on the airplane. You do not save that much battery life in hibernation mode i find, only if you leave it for a few days, then yes i would pick hibernation mode, but a few hours, sleep is fine.. but even then i have left my notebook in the case for a whole weekend, still works and was cold when i grabbed it (still had 30% battery left, not bad considering it had 80% when i put it in there, now this was with Vista, XP i would have been down to about 10%. So it should be fine.

My old laptop, Inspiron 9100(HUGE), had Vista and in sleep mode it would randomly turn on and stay on in the middle of the night... and of course wake me up... I was afraid to use sleep while traveling with my 1330, but it never turns on while it is in my bag, and it starts up really fast. I love this laptop :)

I use sleep mode all the time. I've left laptops in sleep mode in back packs over whole weekends. Never had a problem. Slowly drains your battery, though. Some notebooks won't even make it over a weekend, depends on how low power the sleep mode is. Haven't tested my M1530 for that, yet.

Backpacks still have holes for ventilation. The Zeroshock case completely conceals the Inspiron. It's practically give it a bear hug.

But awesome, I brought it around the entire day and no problems so far. =)

I heartily recommend sleep mode. Unless you're sending the machine to sleep with important things running at the time.

Never had a problem with it, though the other week Vista decided to wake up the machine, and reboot after having updated itself (Something which I didn't say it could do). Come next morning, I'm a tad puzzled about my warmer than usual laptop. Turn it on, low battery warning. Plug it in, Vista brags about having finished installing new updates. Cue muttering and cursing.

In the past, I've managed to drop a laptop which was in sleep mode, and not have any damage done to the drives/software. Couldn't say the same for the screen (The second time did it), but it just confirmed to me the strength of sleep mode.
