    Not always.

I've paid for such warranties and got screwed by Dell.

    Ex: *somehow* the laptop dropped.

Broke: screen (only parts of it turned on), and damaged the HDD.
[all from a fall of 5 feet -- my standing height].

    Had a 2 yr warranty.

Got the same computer back after it being 3 weeks away for repair.

I thought screen replacement + HDD replacement would be a lot more than the $900 I spent on the laptop.

Generally 9 times out of 10, you will not get a new laptop. Dell will fix and replace anything that is broke first. If they can not fix, then you might get a new laptop but it will be very similar to the specs you had. Of course, warranty does not cover intentional damage, theft, or fire.

Warranty coverage is generally limited to fixing what is broke and replacing it with the exact/similar part you have. If you have the matte screen and it breaks, then you'll get a new matte screen. They won't put the glossy screen in there even if you request it because it was not part of your warranty. Same for similar hardware.

    Depends.

If something REALLY bad goes wrong with the system, and Dell can't repair it, they'll send you a new one.

However, if it can be fixed, they'll fix it and send you the new one.

I have a similar warranty though HP on my dv1000. In July I dropped it, and it needed a new motherboard, processor, hard drive, keyboard, and DVD drive. They replaced it all.

Really depends. Computer manufacturers can be weird that way.

It may also depend on business warranty versus home. I have a Dell Latitude and my only problem is I don't like the display and wanted a new one put in by another manufacturer. They said they would do that, but they also offered to swap it for a new one. I thought that was a pretty decent offer being that mine is refurbished. In the end though, I just took the monitor replacement.

nope nothing will be new. they will always use refurbed parts to handle repairs. that 4 year warranty should be at-home so ask them to send a tech to ur home to fix it. that way u dont have to have ur laptop in there evil hands for 3 weeks =). yea i know because i gotten basically every part you can think of replaced by dell.

Does the original poster mean to ask:

"If I decide to be dishonest in 3.5 years and break it on purpose will I get a free technology refresh?".

Well lets assume his motives are innocent lol.

Anyway yes you CAN get a new model but basically only in two scenarios. 1) You had so many problems with one model that Dell's Policy Exception Team will work something out with you. Usually its a full refund. You can use that money to buy a new laptop. 2) Your laptop breaks and you are issued a full system exchange...however your model is out of production and is no longer available on Dell Outlet. In this case you will get the newest equivalent.

For example .. If you 're using 9300 model with pentium M 2.0Ghz 1gb ram 80 GB hdd geforce 6800. u'll be likely to get 9400 model 2ghz Core Duo 1gb ram 80GB hdd , geforce 7900GS.

Many users with 3 years warranty have received replacement like this. If you have any problem with heat or video card, or mother board or something else that you don't like and you'd like a new system. Dell will do this. It's pretty much a big upgrade for me. So wait til Dell announce 9500 series and replace your 9400. If only your 9400 has problems. I'm pretty sure that Dell already make a lot of money from your Warranty by that time.

Dell holds on for spare parts for a number of years, that's for sure. 3-4 years at least. So expect the computer to be fixed. Dell are usually relatively open when it comes to exchanging bad parts, as long as you have bought a good warranty.

Also, please don't break your computer intentionally. That will only lead to Dell being less open about this, and more expensive too.

Agreed. I got 3 years with accidental damage which covers spills and stuff. However I might be giving them a call about this screen. Maybe ask them if they can swap the screen for a glossy one. I am willing to pay an upgrade fee for the laptop screen. Also I will probably request they send someone to do this so I can supervise it and won't have to lose my laptop to them for a while. Right now I am seeing spots where it is "shimmering". It is only a pixel spot (4 seperate pixels) but it is starting to get annoying.

I just got mine back from depot service, dumped water throughout entire system. They replaced pretty much everything, DVD burner, keyboard, motherboard (was done during an onsite service call), processor, graphics and memory. Sent me a replacement hard drive also. The only thing they didn't touch was the LCD and the bottom case. I'm sure it was all with refurbed parts but who cares, my complete care is good until 2009.
