The USB mode is a £0 option on the UK Dell website. I asked for it while I was ordering. I might well take the M1330 to places where dial-up is still king.

It may be worthwhile phoning and seeing if it can be added to your order.

I'm glad to hear that as I called them to upgrade it and the new order still stated "LCD" but she said it was a "web error" so I guess they just need to match the # to the proper wording as I definitely don't want to pay for a LED and receive an LCD...thanks for pointing that out to me - I didn't pay close attention to the part #, just saw that it still stated "LCD" !

Technically all the screens are LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), that's just the technology to make each pixel a certain color. What the LED (Light Emitting Diodes) is is just a newer way of making the LCD panel backlit so you can actually see what color each pixel is. They used to use Cold Cathodes (imagine fluorescent lights and it's close enough) to provide the light, but these are more fragile and take more power than the LED's.

The plant a tree and reclying kit was also an option on the M1210, but together they cost $2. Now its free! As for deciding which one, I might get the Dell if it is cheaper. Most likely, since I am a poor 11th grader with his first job, it won't be until Penryn that I have the cash to replace this 4 year old Inspiron 9100 i'm on now.

A 7200rpm HD i wouldn't opt for one inside a notebook of this size. I think it may struggle with the heat and then there is the increased noise also. A lot of these 160GB HD's 5400 drives are using PMR technology now anyway which means that they are nearly just as fast as the 7200RPM HD's and in some cases they are just as fast but they produce less heat and give better battery life also.

    *Intel(R) Core(TM)2Duo Processor T7500, 2.2Ghz 4MB cache
*2GB RAM (Already ordered 4GB (2X2GB) off ebay, and yes, 2GB is minimum in Australia)
    *160GB 5400RPM SATA hard disk
    *Crimson red LED backlit screen
    *Vista business edition
*3 year completecover full warranty (last dell C400 has been under a car)
    *9 Cell battery
    *802.11N wireless
    *Fingerprint reader
    $3107 total (australian dollars)

As soon as the M1330 arrives, the hard drive is getting nuked, and Fedora 7 Linux / Xen kernel is going on, with fully hardware virtualized Vista business in a small partition for occasional use and browser testing.

Fedora 7 with Beryl desktop effects on an 8400GS with a dual core 2.2Ghz Merom and 4GB of DDR2 is going to cane. And HVM support is just gravy on top.

I'm going to cuddle the Dell man when he arrives.

I struggled with this decision for hours before actually deciding on 7200 rpm. I went through dozens of reviews, benchmarks and comparisons. All of the hardware reviews and comparisons concluded that the noise and heat differences these days are negligible. The battery differences are there, but are pretty small. I saw things like 177 minutes on 5400 rpm vs 171 minutes on 7200 rpm. I can definitely handle a 6 minute loss, or something similar. The benchmarks also showed performance gains throughout, so I decided to go for it.

What size drive is in the m1330? I want to upgrade to a hybrid if possible. Is it 2.5 or 1.8? SATA? Standard form factor?

    Thanks!

What's in my sig, as well as Tuxedo black, Bluetooth, fingerprint reader, 6-cell battery, 3-year warranty, and Sound Blaster software.

I also ordered along with my M1330: Belkin 2-outlet travel surge protector, Dell slim auto/air/AC adapter, Dell Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and a free Dell case.

Total was $2,076.05 with tax, after over 27% off. :D :D

I ordered with only 1GB RAM, and purchased 4GB from Fry.com for only $166.68 shipped. :D I also purchased Logitech's Z-10 speaker system and VX Revolution mouse on sale a month ago to pair with a spare Samsung 19" LCD. Total invested so far in this beautiful laptop: $2,369.20.

Wow....Am I really the only to get the solid state drive???

My two (yes two) M1330 systems are below, one being a purchase with a 1/2 off coupon that totalled with tax $1539Cdn and the other totalled FREE!!!! The price is the lowest I know of to date as they threw in the Complete Care and Processor upgrade free on top of the coupon.

The reason I decided on the solid state drive, except for the incredible speed, low temperature, no moving parts and battery efficiency, was that at 1/2 off I got it for 250 bucks which you wont see for years to come.

I know its small (32Gb) but, because of the nature of my work, I have to plug in an external HDD in any case

Even with the cost withstanding the size of a drive is something thats very difficult for most to deal with. I know people that have more than 30gb of mp3s alone.

Like you said though this is for your occupation and its going to work for you. I even had a hard time justifying the cost of the 7200rpm 200gb drive to myself but like you the choice was easier for me since i got that upgrade for $180.

Which is even cheaper than i could find the bare drive for so it made sense.

Just wondering, why did they replace your xps1210 with a m1330 instead of with another 1210? What was wrong with it that they decided to upgrade it for free?

My M1210 was already in production when I got a call from a guy last Thurs. He told me his job was specifically arranging replacement systems and then told me that my M1210 was becoming a m1330 same specs and then some. The "free" word was the best. I asked him why to which he told me that the m1210 had been removed as a purchase item in home sales (which I am) and further their certainty was not to certain in the future altogether.

Once you get both machines can you post the start up times (from pushing the on button to fully loaded with all "bloatware") for each one? I'd be really interested to see the difference in startup time speed for the two HDs.

There are posted results somewhere; I will try and dig them up. They are what sold me as i believe it was almost 30 seconds shaved off start up and about a 35-40 access/start time for applications.

    But yes...I will....

    Found them:

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,126833/article.html

    File search = 2x faster
Accelerated Windows Start 8-10 sec by these tests but Ive seen another that clames 20-30
Light Weight 1.6oz (confirms 1330 as an ultraportable @ under 4 lbs
    Completely silent
25 % faster cumulative speed difference over other drives

Yes plus they added the 160gb hd 7200rpm fm 100gb 7200 rpm and LED fm LCD and Im told it gets priority over new purchases (Apparently its will be in the production stage later today or tomorrow.

I have been fortunate these last two weeks with the replacement and 1/2 off coupon granted... but there stll have been alot of hours involved.
