Any of you other Dell owners out there use LoJack? I have it, mainly because I thought it would be good for college. Any comments on it. Actually used it, etc.

We used to use this (when it was still Computrace) for all of our corporate laptops. I know of 6 that got stolen with the software installed.......and we have yet to get any of them back. Nice!

Hopefully they've done some improvements because I personally can't recommend it based upon personal experience.

When I reinstalled my dell...it didn't work anymore. There's some bios stuff attached to it, but it flat out does not work.

Well apparently once you report your laptop and it is not given back to you within 30 days you get a brand new one. Something along the lines of that.

Unfortunately no. They don’t offer any kind of (partial or full) refund on the notebook. Only refund the software cost (what a joke :p ). AFAIK its a software implementation (at least for DELL notebooks), which means all you have to do is wipe or replace the HDD. unless you get it for free, there is no point in spending $50 per year. You are better off paying a little more and getting Complete care or some sort of an insurance.

On Dell notebooks, the latest ones anyways, it can't be removed by whiping or replacing the HD as it is present in the BIOS. You'd have to do a system board swap to kill it off. There is a fairly nice review here on Notebook Review about LoJack...

Complete Care would be a waste of money as theft protection as it DOES NOT include theft protection. I'd recommend you get outside insurance, like SafeWare, if that is something you need.

Lowjack is very helpful if ever lets say your system was stolen and you reported the problem to the proper authorities. Lowjack will only be helpful if ever the one who stole the system connected your system to the internet because thats the only time the Lowjack company can detect the system and trace the where abouts of your system. If ever the theft dont connect to the net then there's no way the lowjack company can trace your system or retrieve it.

Yea, some people think its a huge scam, as you pay $x for a program(Open Source may have something similar, or better ;)) and if it gets stolen, well, they try to locate it via the internet, and a smart thief knows to not go on the net once you steal it, first is to remove/change/reformat the HD.

If they don't find it, they refund you the COST OF THE PROGRAM NOT THE LAPTOP.

I can make my own business saying pay me $100 and I'll guarantee a 99% you get your laptop back, if not, I'll refund you....the $100. Lets assume 950 out of 1000 owners don't get laptop stolen, so thats like, $95000 in my pocket :)

It's a legal scam (can't think of any other way to describe it).

As I already posted, we had 6 laptops stolen and NONE of them were found/returned.

Buy some extra insurance for your laptop and you'll be better off.
