Does anybody know where the memory cards are so I can see how easy it is to replace it myself rather than paying for Dell to upgrade to 2 gb of ram.

    You have an E1405?

One (or possibly both) of the sticks is in the memory bay on the bottom of the notebook, it is easily accessed via a cover on the bottom of the machine.

No haha I'm waiting for my E1405 to come, but I wanted to know if I should order the smaller RAM and update it myself or just save myself the hassle. I just went with the factory installed 2 gigs because I needed to boost the price to get the coupon. Gotta love Dell coupons.

I did the exact same thing with my E1405 :p

As far as updating goes, it's entirely up to you though you probably have enough RAM right now.

i heard that the open slot for an additional stick of RAM is under the keyboard and that I need to open up the computer to pop in an add'l stick? Is this true? Can anyone confirm this?

    I just ordered a e1405 today with 512mb ram.

the single factory stick is under the keyboard...look at the top right of the unit by the power, hdd L.E.D.'s and etc....there is a space to pop the frame above the keyboard enclosure off...then you can unscrew the keyboard and that's the 1st stick...the 2nd (DIMM B) is on the back....on my 1405....the windows XP OEM sticker is on it...that's the easy one.

You can see where the module is on the following link. It is the service/upgrade guide to your laptop:
    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins640m/en/SM/index.htm

I recommend upgrading the ram yourself. You guy buy 1 stick of 1 gb for about 100 bucks right now at newegg.com , and the upgrade is very easy. It takes less than 10 minutes to do. It is just a matter of removing some screws and the keyboard.

Most of the moderators and I know of several users go this route. Ram at Dell is ridiculously expensive.

ah, great, thanks for the replies. this other person used the words "take the computer apart", which freaked me out, the upgrade should be a piece of cake just like it was on my current laptop.

Technically you do have to open it up, but that consists of removing the keyboard cover (which pops out) and removing the keyboard - which is screwed in.

The only thing about upgrading the ram is that some users do have a problem the first time - when they are trying to insert the stick in. You have to put it in at 45 degree angle, but as long as you watch how you take it out, you'll be fine. The first time i upgraded mine, it took a couple of minutes to figure out why the stick wasn't going in - but its very simple.

one other question on the RAM, in order to take full advantage of dual channel, i hear that both RAM sticks must be the same?

so if i have two different sticks in there, i'm losing some of hte performance?

i mean i guess i could swap out both sticks and sell the 512 that comes in the laptop too...

one more question, assuming i sell the 'stock' ram and go with aftermarket, would it be better to get 2 512mb sticks or 1 1gb stick performance-wise?
