Is there any way I can lock the audio volume in Vista or make it so that it requires direct user input to change the volume? My Studio 1537 likes to max out the volume by itself due to the media button issue.

Just mute it before shutting down. Even if the media key is raising volume, it will stay muted until unmuted.
