I'm looking for any locks that can attach to my bedpost in my dorm room.
Whenever I visit the Kensington locks website and am directed to an additional link to check the compability of their locks with my dell 8600, I always get a broken link. Can any of you guys recommend a lock for my Dell 8600?

    Hi Ramadoss29,
I think there are a few companies that make the cable locks for notebooks, google it and you will find them.

I do have a comment to make about these cable and lock systems for securing your notebook. They are good for securing your notebook while in a public place when you have to leave your notebook for a few minutes, but they are of no or little use in a private place like a dorm room or somewhere where someone interested in taking it can be alone with the locked cable for 30-60 seconds bacause these cable are easily cut with a pair of heavy duty wire cutters. In a public place someone is not going after your notebook cable with a pair of cutters unless he/she is pretty gutsy, so in the public eye the cable lock system works great. However given just a minute or less with no one looking, these cables can be cut quite easily.

Your best bet is to buy a personal articles insurance policy on your notebook and or hide your notebook. Insurance is for mine is about $35/year for 2k of coverage.

    Good luck
    Jack

    Hi Venom,
Thanks..the Targus was the one I was thinking of. Although even with an alarm if your in a private place like a dorm room a pillow over the alarm is all that is needed to cut the sound way down.

I got the Kensingto MicroSaver a week ago and it works perfectly fine with my 8600. It offers some peace of mind while leaving your notebook unattended for a little while. That insurance sounds like a great alternative, where can I take a look at it?

Just call an insurance agnet like statefarm Ask about a personal articles policy. Don't get a policy that is a "rider" or addendum to an existing home owners or renters policy. The reason for this is that those policies usually have high(500-100) deductible and you want zero deductible. Also if it is a rider or addendum to an existing homeowners policy, a cliam for a stolen notebook could make your homeowners insurance costs go up or worse yet if you make more than a claim or two, say hail damage to your home and a lost notebook; you risk the possiblity of them canceling your homeowners insurance. My policy is for $2000 of value on the notebook and costs between $35-$38/year.
