I didn't read the thread, but if my machine arrived or got back to me like that.. I'd have a frigging fit like a 3 year old in the Wall-mart toy section.

It had to be one hell of a drop or something because the powder coating on these base's are REALLY strong.

Those things must be tough. If I droped the laptop that I am using now from 3 feet on to asphalt I dont think there would be anything left of it

(Not the laptop in my sig, have not recived it yet, it is a 2 1/2 year old gateway POS :p)

i'd think you could fix that with a bit 'o auto paint (the scratch fixer stuff)

should at least cover the metal so it looks clean.

So far so good on my vostro...but it hasn't really left the house yet. That comes on monday :)

Worst one I ever had was an old Toshiba Satellite...I think it was a Pentium 100MHz...that I used at work. Got out of my van in the parking lot and grabbed the laptop case and swung it out of the passenger door...only the zipper was not done up on the side of the case and the laptop "squirted" out the side and cartwheeled across the parking lot for about 30-feet ("swung" it out of the door is the right way to describe it!)

Well, it still worked...even though from that day it rocked a bit on a desk...I think I kept using that toshiba for another 1-1/2 years.

Mind you....I'd like to try that with a Toshiba today ;)

I used that on a couple of the smaller scratches. :p

    Tacky!

I've *almost* done that several times with mine, but, fortunately, the bottom side of the bag sort of folds around it and holds it in for the few seconds before I realize that it's unzipped and the top flap just fell open.

I think that the build quality of the 1420/1400 has always been underestimated, it's one of the most durable mainstream laptops IMO. I still remember the time my 1420 fell out of my unzippered backpack (it goes in through the side), which was around a 4 foot fall onto the floor of my class. Thankfully it landed bottom first, and everything was alright.
