Okay, I looked at Crucial Tech and read all. Result: understood a little on installing ram to my Inspiron700m. I ordered with the Inspiron700m a total of 256ram and now want (scared into it by Brian-the Ad) 512 or more ...? I mean, if I ordered the 512Mb (CT4045758)DDRPC2700 the total would be 768Mb(?).

After powering down, do I just plug the 512Mb of ram into the empty slot or do I have to worry about having to order two similar modules (example 256 and 256 or 512 and 512) and taking up the two ram slots? AM I making this more difficult that it is? Do I have to run a routine to let the computer know that more ram had been added? Now you pc brainy types who like to pick on mac guys got a target! Fire away, but also include some hindsight for me. I do not mind the ribbing, but please offer the alternative.

Thanks Brian (for real). I should have ordered extra at the moment I ordered the Inspiron.
    sincerely,
    macmac

    hey man,

alright first of all how you liking the I700m? So lets start answering these questions...

alright if you ordered 512 mb of ram, that means your machine will now have (pulls out calculator) 768 mb now (so you were right).

To install all you do is power down unplug yourself, make sure not to be walking around and maybe wear some shoes, touch some metal before touching anything on your computer or your ram. If you have a static wrist band wear that. and put her in. No you memory size does not have to be the same. So you could have 512 and 256 thats cool. Just make sure you don't buy 2 gigs of ram and put them in, and your motherboard doesnt support it. Once you have installed it, fire up the machine and the bios will see you have added new memory and your good too go. If not check if your bios has a manual input for how much memory you have. Most likey your machine will figure it out for itself...

    Dear rokov,

Much thanks. Reassurance is a good thing. My Inspiron700m has been pushed back to Aug 30 delivery. It was initially due on 28thAug. I hope Dell understood the year to be 2004...
But do not get me wrong, my Dell rep is awesome. Explained all rebates and was patient-very.

Am looking forward to the pc world.
    Thanks again!
    Sincerely,
    macmac

    Hey Rokov,

Make sure someone is there to sign for the Inspiron. I like UPS but sometimes they leave it on your doorstep (unattended) or a neighbor (hope you have good relations) or take it back for redelivery(best alternative). I was told that to prevent complaints of the past (regarding UPS and even Fed Ex) that all factors(read accusations of neglect) that are usually attributed to the SENDER would be eliminated as much as possible and throw it at the RECIPIENT. In other words, they told you it is coming and to have someone there!

I like Dell so far. The representives are upfront on their responsibilites and the emails are responded to really fast! No hype at all. I guess next to Apple, Dell will be a major player in my computing needs.
Anyway, enough! Good luck on your football (you are in Canada, so to me that reads Soccer?) Thanks again for the heads up!
    Sincerely,
    macmac / honolulu
