ok...still not here yet, but i was able to get my service code, and see what parts i have. i was wondering if people could tell me if i got a good system or not (ie- some screens have more light leakage than others, some dvd drives are better than others)
ok..i have a:
Samsung screen
Seagate hard drive
Philips dvd drive
and i have no idea what type of RAM
-
-
Seagate HDD's are good, wish l had gotten one
Thats all l can comment for lol. -
Samsung makes some of the best screens out there, Seagate makes solid hard drives (better than Maxtor and Western Digital, at least), and I can't really comment on your optical drive. Looks decent overall, though.
-
I have the Samsung screen on my E1705 and I am happy with it (other's are not), seems to be hit or miss. Seagate = great hard drive, can't commect on the philips dvd drive but i know that they are generally pretty decent. As for the RAM Dell often gets noname brand because it is cheaper, they also charge an arm and a leg for it
-
I think that as long as you don't get the Sony cd drive you are fine. The sony drive seems to cause the most problems - I think. We get so many cd/dvd problems that the threads kind of start to run together in my head
-
My friend's Phillips drive on his e1705 was in the wrong mode and i had to uninstall it from the hardware list and reinstall it to get it to play dvds right. Are the Sony drives still ridiculously loud? the Sony in my i6000 shakes the entire table.
-
Most if not all Sony slim drives are re-badged Lite-Ons, FYI.
-
my phillips drive is pretty loud.
-
I got my service code but how do I see my parts?
-
How do you get your service code? And how do you see your parts?
-
i got my service code by asking a dell rep about it. they already sent me an email about the CDs i need, so i just replied back by asking for my service code. but u cant get your service code at least until ur laptop is built...but i dont think u can get it unless it is shipped.
heres a link to where u see your parts:
How to see parts
once your there, go down to the side, type in your code, the chose "original system configuration" then hit go. and there you go
*side note- i still havent recieved my laptop. UPS' website said that it would be delievered today. its almost 7pm and still nothing here. should i call UPS? should i be upset? -
I got the Samsung LCD .. there is a small amount of light leakage at the bottom but nothing all that bad.. you can only notice it in a dark room and on a completely black screen.
-
-
hopefully i can make a review soon. one gripe though...i would think is the keyboard. i guess its something i gotta get use to. for some reason, it seems too far away. oh well, ill get over it -
So when you say you contacted a Dell rep about your service tag, was it in hardware, order, or sales? Because I tried asking someone in order support and they kept giving me my tracking number, so I gave up.
-
also, im blanking right now, where is the option so that if i close my lid, it will shut down, or go into stand by. i use to know it...but i cant remember. must be all the excitement. lol -
Go to your screen saver propterties and click on Power
its under the Advanced section -
-
awww...i got screen ripples
. pushed the back of the LCD to see what happened, and i noticed ripples. oh well, thats the only bad thing i see so far
-
well you aren't suppose to push the back of the LCD - that generally causes the ripples
-
Haha, she's definitely right about that after all its only a plastic behind the screen right?
-
well, i thought thats how people tested for ripples. haha, guess i was wrong. anyways, here is a pic of the light leakage. is this too much?

LOL, there really isn't anything to say that this is too much or not.
As long as you are happy with the screen, then that is all that matters. Most LCDs do have some type of light leakage - just depends on how much. Generally if you only see the leakage when you are in a dark room with a dark screen, then you probably won't notice it unless you meet those two conditions all the time.
LOL, i don't think that makes any sense. -
-
You're just going to have to accept that for the price you pay for the Inspiron line that you're not going to get a perfect, top of the line computer. Some people do luck out with their screens, but most do not (and will not) unless they want to play the return game for a while and hope they win the screen lottery. -
Can someone tell me how to check parts brands?
-
-
-
Can anyone tell me if this is a Truelife display because I did not intend to get one (it wasn't listed in the specs) but it sure looks like it has a glare coating:
MODULE, LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 15.4WX, QUANTA DISPLAY INCORPORATED, GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, 6400
Some of the outlet 6400/1505s have Truelife specified so I thought that since mine didn't, it wouldn't have it. It is a 6400 from Canada apparently if that makes a difference. It is a great screen otherwise with 0 problems.
Also are the touchpad buttons on 6400s supposed to be really mushy, like they go down 2 mm? The keyboard is fine but the touchpad buttons are weird.
Only other nitpick is the bright white plastic bumpers : (
Got SuSE Linux 10.1 on it so we'll see how that goes : ) -
-
That is most likely the matte screen - Dell normally includes "Truelife" in the title if it is a glossy screen. -
Samsung screens are the best no Doubt about it kills LG
