Hey everyone, there seems to be a problem with my m1330 which I'm not sure about. Is the lid supposed to close properly against the palm rest of the notebook or is it a bit loose? When i hold mine upside down, without holding the screen, the lid opens a little. There seems to be no latch mechanism at all. If not for the stiffness of the hinge, i think the screen will open further. Is this normal?

Theres no latch, its based on friction of the hinge

My one (that has since been returned) had a slightly loose hinge. The screen would open a bit as you describe..... got a feeling this is common and just a defect in the design of the notebook.

Dell do boast that you can open it with only 1 hand..... obviously the drawback of this is that it'll flap open on it's own from time to time.

When will you be holding your notebook upside down in a practical sense?

    You're just being picky.

To be fair it happens when the notebook is held at a right angle as well i.e. hinge facing down.

A sony TZ does not do this- it remains closed. However to open it one must hold the base down while lifting the lid- not quite as elegant as the m1330.

The m1530 has a mechanism to keep the lid closed. There's some magnetic force when the lid is close enough to the palm rest. I thought the m1330 should have it as well.

Mine does the same. A combination of the hinges and a small magnet help keep the lid closed, but it seems that it isn't enough to keep it closed when upside down. I don't think it is an issue.

Are you sure about a magnet being present? I'm sure my m1330 did not have this- and I don't see why they would change it for the m1530.

Does anyone have the laptop lid that doesn't sit flush when closed? The left side of my laptop is flush against the palmrest whereas it rises a few mm on the right side. You can see the difference when looking at the laptop from side to side also.

Well, I played with my friend's m1530 for a while (I don't have it now) and as far as i can remember, there seemed to be some kind of magnetic force when you get the lid close enough to the palmrest for the m1530 while there seems to be nothing for my m1330.Not a big issue if the others don't have it either.

    :(

How content are you with it like that? I wish I had never noticed it, because whenever I close it now I always look at it.

Do you have the uneven base also? The front left portion of mine rocks a little bit and that's just as annoying.

Woops, didn't mean to threadjack, as for the OP, mine opens just a little, surprisingly doesn't bother me too much since I carry it horizontally "most" of the time.

Yeah there is a magnet. I saw it the other day when I had the display bezel removed. It's mounted next to the camera.

Mine doesn't do this. In fact I find it to be quite stiff to open, I worry more about what it will be like a year from now.

It raises a little, 1-2 mm and i only notice this when i go to eye level with the laptop. I'm reluctant to call for a replacement for such a minor issue. Just don't feel too good when there's nothing to keep the lid closed properly and worried once the hinge gets loose with time , the lid will swing open??
I have no other problems other than this thing, mine has no whine, runs cool. Oh maybe that bit of gap on the left hinge but it seems part of the design?
