Hi I need help to decide whether i should go in for e1405 (640m as it is called in India) or m1210, the price diff is not more than USD 200 so either would be good but my considerations are as below:

    1. I want a machine which looks good and does perform well.
    2. Dont want to consider other brands or models as Dell seems quite professional till now.
    3. Will not be gaming, would be using the machine primarily for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, internet, email.
    4. Although i do not need to lug my machine around mostly but i am more inclined towards smaller packages.
    5. MY CONFUSION STEMS FROM WHETHER I WOULD BE ABLE TO USE M1210 FOR WORD, EXCEL, ETC. OR WOULD E1405 WITH 1440 * 900 RESOLUTION BE BETTER FOR THE SAME STUFF. I DONT WANT TO BE STUCK WITH M1210 WHEN IT REALLY BECOMES TAXING TO WORK ON IT FOR LONG HOURS DUE TO LESS VISUAL REAL ESTATE, AND ALSO DONT WANT TO BE STUCK WITH E1405 WHEN I CAN VERY WELL DO WITH M1210.

Just for info. i've placed the order for e1405 and it should be with me in 4-5 days but am considering replacing it with m1210 under the 30 days exchange/ money back policy. I wish dell could have arranged for a demo of both side by side so that i could decide on the spot.
If anyone in Delhi can make his m1210 available for 10 minutes then it would really help ?

go with a e1405... you can't go wrong with a larger screen and screen estate. imagine working with spreadsheets with a small screen, like living in hell i guess

Yeah, higher screen res makes for a more relaxing, efficient and less stressed computing experience.

I love my m1210, the only drawback is your pretty much stuck with one window at a time, thats the price of portability, for your above listed needs, and desire for more space the 1405 sounds about right for you. When you get the unit, set the resolution to 1280x800, it will look kinda blurry, but that would show you exactly what to expect from the m1210 screen real estate wise

If it's a matter of weight...I would recommend stepping up to the 1505. More upgrade options than the 1405, including better video systems...1405 only accomodates the Intel Integrated graphics...and the 1505 weights just at 7 lbs...not much heavier than the 1405. 1405 is 13" wide. 1505 is 14" wide

Thanks guys ... everyone seems to suggest that i should be going in for e1405, have a more relaxing worktime and save some money too.

Looks like a wise decision .... ummmm !

I'll most probably go with that, but still feel that XPS M1210 looks really neat aesthetically ... Only if the screen was not to be taxing after some time, i would have gone with this baby.

Thanks anyways fellas ... and if some one has to add some more bytes, please do. :) :)

I have to jump on the wagon here.

Although I am a proud owner of an M1210, I have to say, for your needs, the E1405 is probably your better bet. The M1210 is stylish. Period. It easily satisfies your first criterion and in my opinion, sports a sleek and professional look.

The M1210 is a small package for its specs and that can't be disputed. It's about the size of an A4 or 8.5x11 piece of paper, but that's also its drawback. I like to surf with multiple windows too, and I find with the M1210, while possible, it can be a nuisance. Overall, great laptop, but one that wouldn't satisfy your needs.

Like I said, when you get your 1405, set it at 1280 by 800, if you can work comfortably with it set like that, you can work comfortably on an m1210, if you cant work comfortably, dont even think about the m1210

I had moderate leakage on my e1505, nothing too bad, and really most people make too big a deal out of this in the first place, sure it looks ugly when windows boots, but I for one dont use my system with a plain black screen,I prefer to run applications etc, than to stare and complain that my big black void isnt as black as I would like, so once I got past bootup, I had zero issue. My m1210 has a great screen, being a 12.1 going from a 15.4, the viewing angle restrictions take time getting used to, the smaller the screen, the tighter the angles, that just cant be helped, you'll notuice this in a 14.1 as well, its just the nature of the beast

Well guys i got the delivery of my e1405 yesterday. Overall a high performance machine but just too **** big for my taste. It does not seem to exciting enough yet.

Screen at 1440 * 900 res is gr8, creates so much more space, however even at 1280* 768 it is pretty good. As suggested 1280* 768 on 12" would be more difficult.

Was just wondering cant you surf multiple windows through mozilla or are you talking abt opening two windows side by side.

This machine is too thick and that makes it bulky. I wonder if m1210 is also a tad bulky. In this age thin is in and this is definately not thin by a long way. Overall good specs at decent price but dont know, what to do. Maybe i can go in for dv2000 from HP or Sony Vaio FJ78, but i know from others experience that HP and Sony have bad after sales service.

Most probably i'm going to ask dell to deliver m1210 and then return the one i either cant work (read m1210) with or dont like enough (read e1405).

Thin may be in, but aneorexic machines have drawbacks as well, like no built in optical drives, low battery life, and in general lacking performance. The m1210 is thicker than your typical ultraportable, but then again its not your typical ultrportable, it has all the power and features of desktop replacement, in a very small package

Nirvann, I spend several hours at a time creating documents with no problems, the only niggle is that its difficult to have a research page and the document viewable at the same time, but I knew that going in, and for features and price the m1210 is going to be your best bet in that class of notebook, please ask me questions in the treads and not in PM in the future, good luck
