There has been much discussion about the value of the soundblaster audigy software available for dell systems. I added the option when I purchased my m1210 and have had it installed for 2 months. I love my m1210 but I have to admit I was appauled by the tiny sounding speakers. I have had several notebooks including ibm T22 series, apple g4 powerbook, g4 ibook and have used some other dell nb's at work. The m1210 had to have the worst sounding speakers I have ever used. Today I figured hey it cant get worse so let me try removing the sb software. In my opinion the audio improved at least 30% from the blaringly horrible super high treble effects. It is a much more balanced sound without the software. Don't take my word as gold, but definitely try removing it if you are not happy with your audio quality

i think its ok to mess around with the settings, and it can make the built in speakers sound better, but if im listening to music onthe laptop its most likley through the headphones

as stated above, an important point to remember that your sound system is only as good as your weakest link. for notebooks this is the speakers.

because sounds below the midrange level (5000ish) need physically larger speakers to reproduce the appropriately sized waveform, it's just not physically possible to get good sub to midrange sound reproduction on a notebook.

if you're going to use headphones or external speakers, then you can start asking if it's worth it to you.

Did you ever turn on EAX in the SB pull down menu? It makes a difference I thing. Not its not 5.1 by any means, and sounds "small". But I dont think it sound bad by any means.
