    Hi all

I am about to purchase a new portable notebook from DELL soon. D420 is too slow for my liking. So, its pretty much comes down to M1210 or D620. Let say if CPU, memory, HDD, OS and warranty are the same. In fact the pricing is about the same too. Which one would you choose?

Secondly, should I pick Vista Business or Ultimate for the OS?

Could you list your requirements? There are some major differences b/w the two, so it's not possible to give an off the cuff suggestion...

It depends on which size screen you want.

    They are UV Core Duo's....

Equivalent of a Pentium M around 1.7-2.0 Ghz.

That's pretty slow compared to the M1210.

    Really? I didn't know that.

I've got a Pentium M 2.0 Ghz in my Dell 6000 laptop, and guess what? It is plenty fast! I would never call it slow.

Have you used a core2duo? I've had a PenM and it's slow compared to the core 2 duo.

Btw, I said it was PRETTY slow, not like a celeron slow LOL.

btw soundsgood, just go buy the D420 and report back to us mmmkay!? jeeesh we're anxious to hear from you.

Your Pentium M2.0GHz will be a bit faster because if I'm not wrong, it is the Intel 760 which has the 533MHz FSB & those ULV CPUs are probably more the same speed as an Intel 755 2.0GHz but 400MHz FSB.... By the way, the speed that I'm talking about is with respect to running SuperPI up to 2 million digits.

    No, actually... I haven't yet.

Unless a nice EPP deal comes up I'll be buying a Refurb since this will be my spare "throw it in the car and go" laptop. Unfortunately none of the refurbs in the Outlet have had a built-in Cingular 3G card, which I'd really like to get. I keep checking (all the time) but no luck yet.

lol i was just joking with you. You should always take time when investing a lot of money.

Man, once you go Core 2 Duo, you'll never go back. :D

Oh, I know... but I really have been checking for a refurb D420 with built-in Cingular 3G. I've seen a few with built-in Verizon pop up, but none with Cingular -- yet. ;)

I gotta tell ya, I'm pretty happy with the speed of my Pentium M 2 Ghz... I can't see the need for anything faster (to be honest).

so you're pretty much set on getting a D420 then right? I would assume so because you don't need anything faster, you want great battery life, you don't need discrete graphics card, and you wanted something under 4 pounds.

    Thanks all the feedback.

The reason I dont want D420 is because it uses 1.8" 4200rpm HDD. Its just too slow. My old notebook suffer lag due to slow hdd and speed dramatically improve after I switch to 5400 rpm hdd.

Anyway, I guess it pretty much comes down to screen size and graphic card. Would you notice 2" difference in screen size? Is 12" screen size too small for long usage? I spend 8-12hours daily with my PC or notebook . In fact, I leave both my PC and notebook are on 24/7. My job depended on them.

Whats D620 graphic like? I dont really play games. But I do watch TV program via TV tuner and DVD movies. Often I like to do multi-task like surf online and have TV program running in the background. I really hate when everything is in "slow motion".

This is actually my only concern about the D420. Perfect size, perfect weight, etc... but the slower hard drive kinda scares me.

This is what I'm afraid of.
