Can I connect either of these two laptops to an external 19" wide screen monitor and set the resolution so it fits the 19" screen? I want the portability of these two laptops, but the ability to hook them up to a larger monitor to use as a "desktop replacement." On Dell's site, the resolution for the M1210 is 1280x800, but the E1405 can go up to 1440x900. Does this mean that the E1405 would work better when connected to a larger external monitor?

You can connect either laptop to any VGA monitor. They external LCD will run at it's native resolution--the GPU in either notebook will drive WUXGA+, WSXGA+, or whatever res the external monitor is. The Dell site is telling you the native resolution of the included LCD panel.
Any semi-modern notebook (any size, as long as it has a VGA/DVI out) will be able to drive your monitor.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
Hey, i am currently using a dell m1210 and connecting it to the asus 19 ws. I had a unfair share of problems with this. using windows xp and the driver from dell, with tech ppl support i wasnt able to run in 1440*900. Installing the 97.xx driver made that happen, but there were lots of starting up issues assoicated with this driver, further, daemon tools seems to give a blue srceen to my lappy. So i switched to vista, which can be a little unstable at times, have solved the problem with the monitor and its resolution.
may be i am just unlucky! :<
hope this helps
M1210 or E1405 w/ separate 19" LCD monitor?
