Does anyone know if the M1330 supports digital audio over its HDMI port? Or is it like the Asus notebooks up until now where their HDMI only carries video?

So far it seems that if they haven't integrated an HD-DVD or Blu-ray drive companies aren't bothering to go to the trouble of adding audio...

It's quoted somewhere on dell that it DOES include digital 7.1 surround sound...but I wouldn't believe it untill I used it myself. :(

This is a huge sticking point for me. I have a need for a light-use portable computer, and a light-use home theater PC, and I'd rather buy one machine to do both jobs than two separate machines.

For the home theater PC side, all I need is an HDMI output that also carries audio and I'll be able to hook it up to my HDMI-supporting receiver. So far I know the Acer Aspire 5920G will definitely do the job, but this is so much sexier...

Well, I just spent some time online with a Dell rep and he swears the HDMI port will carry audio.

Nice! If it really does carry the audio signal as well, the m1330 just got more impressive.

yeah, I would be surprised if it does carry digital audio

Well, I specifically pointed out to the rep how most other laptops (Asus, HP, etc.) with an HDMI port only carry video, and he replied how Dell is a "standards company" and implemented the full HDMI standard since that's what businesses would expect. He then said he looked at internal documents on the m1330 that confirmed that its HDMI will carry audio.

There's always a grain of doubt until it's actually confirmed by someone, but at least this is a good reason to return if it it DOESN'T have it! ;-)

And yeah, if it does carry audio this is the perfect compact laptop for HT use.

I've posted it in another thread before, I also plan to use it for Home Theatre.
Hope someone here with a 1330 will confirm this ... (Of course after it is shipped)

There's always the option of buying another sound card (USB) to get digital audio.

I hope you're right as well. Dell suspiciously labels the HDMI port as video on there specs

    Video: HDMI

Not nearly as convenient as the one-cable HDMI solution, however.

When you click on the "+" of the topmost slideshow at dell.com
and then scroll to the 9th picture, it clearly says "HDMI Audio Digital Interface". Not a prove, though, but at least you've got it written on their webpage.

I got a question about HDMI as well. Does this notebook support HDCP for HD DVD and blu-ray playback. I know I can get an external USB drive if I have to.

I have finally asked Dell on the phone. They have told me that this notebook does support HDCP.
