I'm about 2 weeks into the order process now and im starting to get irritated.
I initially thought there was no way my ship date of 8/22 would be legit but now its starting to look like thats a realistic date.
Its just inexcusable at this point. We've seen multiple companies drop santa rosa notebooks within that last month and a half and this has been the most ridiculous launch yet.
The lack of competition at the 13.3 inch screen size is really making it hard to find any real alternatives. I like the looks of the new toshiba U300 and other notebook im waiting on its release is the asus s37s. Its just looking like if dell doesn't ship out to anybody next week it may be time for me to move on.
-
i liked the tosh. I played around with one for a couple of hours at circuit city...it wasnt bad.
-
You knew well in advance when placing that order that the wait time is long and you are still irritated? For what it's worth, At the price I paid from the drake deal I will gladly wait.
-
My delivery date says July 18th, yet it says on the main site that they won't be even begining deliveries until July 20th. Still says 'In production'. Getting annoyed.
-
Well ever since my order was pushed back by almost a month I've started to look at what other alternatives there are (not many, as it turns out, since Sony still hasn't updated it's SZ to Santa-Rosa and LED screens are quite rare).
That and the uncertainties around the T7700 in the M1330 (not that I absolutely want this CPU, but changing it means getting back at the beginning of the queue...) -
for the price i paid for it, i can wait 6 months.
-
I got a deal on the notebook too but i ordered so i would get it and i'd be able to use it not just for kicks and giggles. Dude just dont presume to know what someone else knew or was told ahead of time.
Its just my opinion that this launch obviously isnt going right and rather than sit and wait for nothing i'll explore my options.
Maybe i just had cloudy judgement when i ordered. I normally dont fall for iphone like bandwagon products like this but hey, looks like im in line waiting for a product thats probably not worthy.
I need someone to get this thing in their hands. -
I already cancelled my order as I found out that Dell automatically (???) changed my order (from a T7700 to a T7300) since they experienced heat and power supply problems with the T7700...
If it's not working, that's okay. But they could have told me at least that it's not possible to ship it like that...
Maybe I wait for the new Sony or Asus. Or maybe I will have a look at the 12" notebooks (IBM X61?). -
Yes yes yes *evil grin* cancel your orders, so we the m1330 users can be more unique and less common wahahaha
Just kidding
Well although I'm getting a bit irritated with the waiting.. i will not cancel my order. I have waited since march to get a laptop, that is light-weight and packs a punch. And during the wait, i discovered upcoming things like LED screens, New GPUs (8-series) and new processors (santa rosa). Well i have waited for 5 months already.. whats 1 month more to wait..
Plus the way i see it , laptops are investments, you buy them and use them for quite sometime. Its different if you go to some place to eat and it takes 2 hrs for the food to served, that i can see why anyone will be irritated/frustrated. But no offense to anyone on this thread, just stating a opinion -
-
I think some shipping dates people have been quoted are extremely long. I do not think shipping dates should be any longer than 2 weeks, otherwise it should be taken down and not sold till stock it available.
To actually make the purchase and then be told it could be nearly 2 months away is not how to do business. Lenovo is a classic at this. Dell usually not so bad. -
As long as I get it before september i'm happy to wait. Theres no competition when considering both its specs and warranty service.
Patience is a virtue. -
People who got a 18 July ship date:
Can't you complain once that date has passed / changed? Surely you could negotiate a discount or get Dell to throw in an accessory or two?
-
CLIFFNOTES: **** Dell.
I was hours away from getting the 1330 , but a call to Dell changed all that.
I was eyeing the XPS 1220 since November of 06. I had waited and waited until I had gathered enough money, and then when the XPS 1330 was announced, I shat myself. I was so god damn excited, that I would long on everyday and configure one just because I was that excited. Then, the day I call to order it, the Dell sales person tells me that for some reason, they are having problems with Visa's, so I would have to call in the next morning. I was irritated but none the less, I could wait one more day, if it meant getting the 1330. That night, I was browsing the internet, looking for any last minute complaints about the 1330 (granted I wanted to make sure what I was getting, really did live up to the hype.) It turns out, on one of the dell forums, right here on notebookreview, there was a rumor going around that uninstalling windows Vista would void all warranties. I thought, bull****. What the hell does uninstalling your OS have to do with accidental protection coverage, and hardware failure. I googled the problem some more and read that HP laptops were rumored to have the same issue, but in actuality, uninstalling Vista had nothing to do with it. So 9 am I call Dell, talk to a sales person who reassures me that uninstalling Vista WILL void all Dell warrenties. I ask to speak to a supervisor who reassures me that indeed uninstalling Vista again WILL void all warranties.
So Dell likes to force people to use an OS like it or not? Hey, I am a student, and **** happens. I NEED that accidental protection plan. Who knows what the hell is going to happen to that laptop in the next four years.
Secondly, Vista blows. Everyone knows it. If it isnt the sheer size of the ****ing thing, the EULA agreement did it for me. Seriously, I have privacy issues. If you people dont give a **** that Microsoft can go through your comp without your authority then go right ahead. I like using pirated office, and I dont need **** from microsoft.
So thank you Dell for losing ANOTHER customer, because you like to force microsofts **** down everyones throat.
I wasn't going to be one of those people who opted for the low end 1330. Total Price: $2,453.26 to be exact.

Yes its not the same, its not 13 inches, or super light, or most of the awesome things that the 1330 really has. I mean I COULD have just gotten the 1330 and got safeware.com's laptop insurance, but I really wanted to give Dell a big **** you. I spending about $150 more for a Mac, but really, I can choose to run tiger, XP SP2, or Ubuntu, without voiding that Apple care plan. Frankly, Apple could give a **** less. Yea I could have opted for a sony vaio with accident protection, but seriously, who the hell plays games on a vaio? I wanted a college laptop, with some gaming power, and I had little choice. -
I was not presuming and this was a known fact that there will be delays. If you can't wait then cancel and move on. Have a little patience before you get a heart attack. -
sesshomaru Suspended Disbelief!
Anyway, the MBP is a good choice too.. -
You're right, this IS plain bs. Unfortunately, she assured that she had asked her manager several times earlier this week about it. I have no idea what an OS has to do with hardware reliability or accident protection.
Also, I understand that IF I had a problem, that I could probably reload vista on it before I send it to get fixed, but then there is that hypothetical situation in my mind of where I loaded XP or ubuntu, and I wouldnt be able to access the harddrive. Yea its a far stretch but if it did happen, it would be a pain in the ass to take care of it. Second, just the idea of giving money to a company that actively supports this made me sick. -

I am considering canceling. If the notebook wasn't ready for market, or able to be produced it shouldn't have been put on the website. I'm gonna it another week to see if it changes from pre-production.
Maybe these "Drake" and other university deals were part of the problem, people ordering cheap who are not students! I certainly didn't do that. I'm glad they've taken that deal away! -
I will, if XP voids warrenty and will get IBM, little more money but I do have an option to choose xp.
-
I am seriously considering cancelling. I will wait and see till Tues for Sony to announce its new SZ. My ETA is 7/28, but if it slip, I will definitely cancel my order. This reminded me of Lenovo's incompetence all over again.
-
Once the estimated ship date has passed and you have not received your laptop - by all means, complain to Dell, get concessions, cancel your order, do whatever you wish.
But to get angry at them only because your personal expectations of a much sooner ship date hasn't materialized so far is a bit naive.
It's already been discussed to death why Dell launched the M1330 without having stock on the laptop. If you don't like the way the business works, don't buy from them. -
Am I pleased that Dell has given me a ship-date that is 4 days after I start college? No.
Will I be canceling my order because of it? No.
I too had had my eye on the m1210, but when the m1330 came along, it just screamed futureproof. I love all the features about it, and because of my college's deal with dell, I was able to get 18% off with 3 year protection.
As far as the vista thing goes, I'm not a huge fan of it, the DRM, the way not everyone has updated their drivers, but I've had enough experience with windows to know that whatever feature you want to change/eliminate/add there will be a hack or a fix or something, as long as you know what you're doing.
I personally would love to run windows 2000 on the m1330, but if when I have the ACTUAL warranty sheet in my hands and read the fine print and find out that's not the way dell rolls, well, that's the cost of getting this hardware with a dell name. -
Let me put this to rest for everyone. Software will not void your warranty for any PC.
I personally went through this when I was testing Vista and got this laptop; there were so many concerns because drivers were not available. I cleared it up with Dell then and what they said was simple....
Your system is warranted complete. If you decide to put XP back into it or run a dual boot or whatever, its still a warranty issue if HARDWARE goes bad.
Your not covered only for the software that did not come with your system which at that time was Vista RC1 and 2 for me.
As far as people wanting to go back to XP...this reminds me of when XP came in and so on and so on.
The "Oh I love XP because its so reliable crowd" will always be there either because they REQUIRE it for effective use of workforce programs or because they really dont have the knowledge and are afraid to move up.
From a personal standpoint, I cant believe that anyone would truly want to keep XP for anything other than work because, lets face it...the system crashes alone right until the end for power users were phenomenal, not to mention how hard it was to restore any previous system...
I must have reinstalled XP a million times .
In any case...the software you use does not affect your warranty in any way shape or form and if anyone says they got it from a Dell Rep, push the point and tell them to show you where it says that.
Your warranty is clearly spelled out to you.
Oh and for those threatenning to cancel consider it...the reality of it. First you are doing us a favour. Second, your cancellation has absolutely no effect on Dell unless you find a way to do it in mass force. So, in actuality, you are assisting with their backlog. Third, you are going to hold out for what??? A Sony??? Please!!!
Right now Sony is busy sitting in their planning room saying $%%$^%!!! We need to reevaluate. Sony could never have expected Dell to hit like this so hard, with such a light and well constructed machine, so many options and so on...
They have to find a way to get back to the top of the hill with the Sz which is next to impossible. Why?? The only thing I can see that they can do to up Dell is try for a more powerful processor or standard SSD drive which is very costly and would put them right back to the beginning again. You dont think you can just say "Hey lets throw an 8600 graphics card in their k?"
Right now sony is stuck. If they release in a few weeks, there is no way they can compete with what dell just did!!
Its simple business tactics. Maybe Dell released a bit sooner than they expected and maybe, just maybe, it relates to the sony release. Do you think if Sony releases the SZ with any less power than this it might affect their foothold???
Good job Dell. Ive been with sony and have never been impressed with their CS. Actually I have never found anythin close to Dell XPS CS. -
Yes, in my mind Sony are the next alternative but not so true on their prices. It's ridiculous, especially the UK prices. The FZ pricing is particularly poor, even though they've only just recently reduced their prices on Sony-Style, bit late in my honest opinion and to only offer a 1280x800 on a 15" screen is absurd.
Their SZ range is also £300-£400 over priced compared to Dell's range. You really are just paying for a Vaio stamp on the laptop chassis. Well enough slating Sony... The M1330 in comparison is a great deal at the expense of a longer lead time, providing they promise to ship no later than the EDD, I'll be happy. -
-
It may mean that you cannot get software support/warranty on XP. However it should not affect hardware warranty.

It might be how the business works, but I can't think of any other new Dell laptop thats taken so long to get to the market. Ordering a new car typically takes months, but the same shouldn't be true for a laptop computer. I'd bet there were more problems than we know about.
-
If you still worry about your warranty, just get it insured. So far i know of 1 other person who tried, my price was $35 a year, his was $100 a year. Even $100 is competitive price.
Edit: i believe dell launched the m1330 sooner than they could make them, and the response on the inspiron line caused dell to get backlogged. This probably ruined the 1330's overall build times. Just my guess. -

I was going to buy the Rizeon S37 (built on Asus S37) but supplies got delayed (to early August?) and when the Dell sales rep said they could deliver by 20th July, I signed up with Dell. I'm going on a trip just after 20th and I wanted to take the new notebook with me.
If Dell can't deliver on 20th July (which the status system is still giving as the estimated delivery date) or very soon after, I will have to review my options. The S37 doesn't have the LED backlight option (which I would like) but it does have 3 USB ports, a built-in modem and an eSATA port (which I am more likely to use than HDMI).

They maybe thought that I didn't saw their mistake and wanted to order a T7300.
I called my rep and she said that the order was downgraded to the T7300 because the T7700 is not available at this time. She also said that she can't upgrade to the T7500 at the moment. But I don't know why, on the website the T7500 is still there. -
For all Dell's faults, they've offered UXGA on 15" laptops for what, almost 10 years now? And WUXGA for 5 years. Options go a long way. -
-
For the price of the Sony, in my opinion - I thought it was justified for them to offer a better resolution screen for their FZ series that's all. The Sony FZ and the Dell M1330 are incomparable due to the difference in size. Sony may look smart but unless they seriously reconsider their pricing strategy for their Vaio notebooks in the UK market, my business will remain with Dell - simply put - more competitive in the consumer market.
Buzzman - regarding the T7300 downgrade, it's ludicrous why Dell would keep the T7500 on their configuration pages if they simply couldn't provide it. Dell needs to sort this out aswell as the delivery issue. They can't just cash in and then say they can't provide something to what was originally agreed upon. -
I'm not gonna cancel mine, it's been in the build stage for a couple of days now. I assume I'll get it next week.
-
If its not here by XMAS I will cancel it
-
So I did but I also went ahead and upgraded to the LED screen and a better hard drive....
