Is it relatively easy to buy the 2GB RAM separately and install it to save $100 or so? I'm definitely buying tonight and am trying to squeeze the price down a bit more.

It should be easy, lots of people have done so.
There are lots of guides to installing ram into laptops, google and you will find answers =P

Yep, not a problem. Check www.newegg.com for for pricing if you're in the States, and then see what the best deal from Dell would be. Installation is not difficult and will not void your warranty.
