I can see that the 8400M's powermizer feature may be the cause of the popping. I have a topic on my findings, but no one seems to be responding. I have an M1330 with the X3100 on the way, so when it comes next Wednesday (ordered today!) I'll be able to confirm my findings.

In the meantime, you can try upgrading all your drivers. There's a topic somewhere on NBR, search for m1330 drivers.

There have been various reasons for the noise, you'll have to search the site a bit.

I did read a post that "suggested" Dell improved the shielding to try to minimize noise / cross-talk on the audio path with motherboard revision A04... . Others suggested the situation improved with a revised BIOS ( A06+, I believe).

So please check your BIOS and your mobo revision* and let us know what you have, thx.

*The mobo revision is on a white label-strip stuck to the main memory bracket and can easily be viewed by removing the largest of the two back (bottom) covers. If it helps, you can look @ pics of my torn-apart 1330 ;)
