Hello, I have the annoying whine on the CPU on my M1330.

I phoned up Dell tech support who guided me through changing the BIOS from A05 to A02, in an attempt to solve the problem. Needless to say it didn't work.

I am not certain but I swear since I have done this the noise from the laptop has dramatically increased, with both the fan and the general HD or whatever noise. I believe that the fan comes on now far more frequently with A02 BIOS.

And really annoyingly, there is no current A05 BIOS released due to some "technical problems" with it, I was told by Dell. Does anyone think a new BIOS will come out, if so, when?

Can anyone here with the A05 or A02 BIOS confirm if they think that their M1330 is noisy or not? I know it is completely personal opinion but a rough guide would be good.

Also, about the CPU whine, I am pretty certain that it is in every laptop to varying degrees. But due to a combination of factors I think that some people cannot hear it. As you get older you cannot hear higher frequencies and I believe that the noise is a of a very high frequency, and so older people may not be able to hear it and so dismiss it as their laptop not having it. Also, they may have the CPU whine to a lesser degree.

I personally, being younger cannot stand the constant ringing in my ear.

The reason I think this is because both of the M1330's that I have have it.

Does anyone who is under 22 not have this CPU whine?

I am 23, I don't hear any CPU whine. Even with my ear to the notebook, no noise at all but the HD

Where can we find out what changes have been made since this bios revision was implemented? Or more importantly, what these changes are supposed to alleviate?

I have the A02 bios with no whine, but many have the same bios and do hear it. I don't think the bios version has anything to do with the whine.

Hi, I didn't mean that A05 solved the whine, I said that in general if the A05 was more loud in terms of HD and all the other moving parts?

From this thread it sounds to me as if Dell have been experimenting with the sleep states. I have A00 BIOS (and a whine).
Sounds like maybe A02 was intended to reduce whine but runs hotter (like the hacks to remove the sleep states). A05 may have gone back to the original settings.

I'm curious as to what exactly creates the noise. It has to be something physically vibrating - perhaps acting like a piezo transmitter. I would have thought it might be possible to damp it, clamp it, or absorb some of the sound.

mines A05. mine has occasional whine maybe 2% of the time. When it starts its loud enough to drive me nuts (I'm 21 and seem to be sensitive to high pitch noise). Not sure what makes it do the noise though as it does not happen all the time when the computer is in low power sleep states. Ive watched it drop into C3 & C4 before with no noise at all. But sometimes when it drops down it goes nuts seems to happen when charging the battery when near full though it was a bad battery but its definitively the CPU.

Mine is A05 and I can hear the whine. The whine is constant and can he heard if place my ear near to the laptop.
