Well had my M1330 for just under a week now. I have only just discovered that the laptop makes a really high pitched whine (much louder than cpu whine) when the laptop is charging and the following conditions are met:
    • The laptop is off
    • The AC is plugged in
    • The battery charge has reached a level between 80% - 99%

When the AC is removed the whine stops as is when you turn the laptop on. The sound is coming from the RAM slot. When the laptop is running then its fine, its only when the laptop is off. Once the laptop has been charged fully, the whine stops. The noise is very loud and can be heard from about 2 metres.

Is this a sign of a faulty laptop or are many people having the same problem?

    Thanks

If the whine is in the system call in for a replacement..a few have spoken of this and arranged replacements.

Yeah, the whine is in the system. I'll give them a ring in the morning.

    Thank you flamenko

I have this sometimes and so do many others. I don't think its a major problem. Since the rest of the laptop is pretty much perfect, it's a keeper. I wouldn't worry about it unless it really really bothers you.

If he should call Dell up, alot more M1330 owners should as well. Put your ear to the notebook when charging between 90 and 100%. I think this mostly occurs with the 6 cell battery, though its possible with 9 cell too. Not a major problem at all. I've read where 5 or 6 people on this board have the whine. There are probably thousands and thousands of M1330's out there with this same noise. If the rest of the notebook is perfect, don't return it. I've been through 3 M1330's already.

Thanks for your advice FrontierDriver. Feel better that its not just me experiencing this problem.
I only posted this message as it really is loud, I can deal with the cpu whine but this noise is just too loud to ignore.

Is it audible when the notebook is sitting on a desk in a normal evironment (ie.. some noise?) Mine isn't very loud. If it's just charging, I can't hear it unless I put my ear up to the notebook or a few inches away.

You can defiantly hear it in normal environment. I have the tv on as well as the noise from outside and you can still hear it quite clearly without putting the laptop to your ear.

    Thanks for all your help.

I would ask for a replacement. Then, you can choose between the better of the 2 M1330's.

I had the same issue and I reported it about 2 weeks ago, and it was the first time ever they heard that. Got a replacement. They should have a diagnostic file wit XPS support because I spent like 2 hours setting up a file with them. It isn't a battery or AC adaptor issue because they sent me a replacement and it still had that issue. You'll also notice that the noise only occurs when it reaches ~80% to ~92/94% charging. That's because when the battery reaches that point it enters a higher amperage charging state because it needs more power to fill the reach the rest of the battery. Just get a replacement.

I got a replacement for the issue as well. The replacement doesn't make the whining noise, but it wobbles (another common problem) and it runs so HOT! You get rid of one problem and find many others. I'm keeping the laptop with the battery whine.

Thanks everyone. I have ordered a replacement and will choose the best one between the two. Hopefully the new laptop wont have this whine and not have any other problems!

i don't know if this the right thread, but my laptop sometimes makes a strange noise,i think it comes from the hd part..the sound is quite hard to describe,it's like screeching,as if a movement of steel electronic devices..like it's positioning itself..it only lasted for 1-2 seconds,it's not always,i mean i always forget about it because it happens like every 10 days or so..usually when i left the laptop open for many days (for downloading) without resting..using AC power without the battery.
any of guys have the same problem? it doesn't really bother me but everytime it happens i was quite shocked because i think like some electronic device in my room going to explode,really..i was like jumping from my chair.

i have this problem as well, but i will be honest with you guys, i'm pretty sure the whine is coming from the ac adapter and not the computer at all? anyone else?
