Theres a hdmi port for m1330 but do you think it's useful? theres no blueray drive whats the point of having a hdmi port there where you can't even output 1080

HDMI is compatable with DVI via an adapting cable... thats the only use it will have for me..Even if they do release a blu ray drive.. it would cost too much for me to bother with it

The 8400m GS can upconvert to nearly 1080 from what I understand.

Plus from what I understand it will be full HDMI and carry digital audio as well, although I don't fully believe this until someone who has the m1330 can confirm it. :)

In theory it should look better than using an analog connector (RGB) or even those Pr and Pb ports on your HDTV. It will only look as good as your TV/Monitor though!

And yes, all HDMI carry audio and video but many computers with the HDMI port have restricted theirs to video only. I believe the new Asus is one computer that has the video only HDMI.

I've found that with the audio out you have to open the program you want hdmi audio from after you've set HDMI audio to default. If you already have the application open when you connect the HDMI port then it will still play audio to the speakers. Don't know if that will help anyone but I figured I'd share.

Some media players and applications have settings where you can actually pick where to output to instead of just windows default.

As for the HDMI port, HELL YES its useful! Does do 1080p btw with sound. I found sound is limited to 2 chan PCM only (does not pass dd, dts or any other digital formats) but its better than nothing I guess. Would be great if there was a SPDIF port on the m1330 but you can't have everything.

I have tried now for several days to get real 1080p (Casino.Royale.1080p.H264.LPCM.DTS.DD51) working on my M1330.

The sound falls behind and the screen sometimes stalls. I have read several places that the 8400M GS(128MB) is sufficient to play this. Can anyone please help?

I have tried the CoreAVC with both cccp or just ffdshow, but no luck.

I am running Vista home premium, penryn 2,5GHz, 4GB ram.

Umm...you may want to edit out the "filez" name out of your post Mr. P!r@te downloader. If you're having audio problems it looks like the movie includes several different audio streams (PCM, DTS & DD5.1), I suggest trying a different one. PCM should be the least stessful on the CPU, but is probably only 2.0, not surround sound.

Also, 1080p H264 should work just fine. I use just the k-lite standard codec pack (ffdshow) with fine results on my rig as listed below in sig. Also, 1080p Quicktime (also H.264) works no problem. I haven't tried outputting via HDMI though at 1080p res...my HDTVs are only 720p right now :(

Im still waiting for my M1330 to arrive, but would have defo gone for a BluRay drive had I of been given the option!!

Its strange how the M1730, being Dell's 'Flagship' model, does not have a HDMI port, but the 1330 does! Above all else, my BluRay drive is in my M1730! :(

With my M1730, I have a DVI to HDMI cable, then have a seperate cable for sound. Would be so much nicer to have the one cable on the M1330. If the M1330 had a BluRay drive, it would be an excellent portable BluRay player as well!!

Does anyone know if the BluRay drive from the M1530 will fit in the M1330?? Im assuming its the same standard size??

No, it doesn't fit. A member here tried it using the M1530's parts.

I would hope that with the speed increases, battery and heat reduction benefits and all round efficency boost of a Montevina/Nvidia 9 Series hardware tether that a Blu-Ray drive inclusion could be instated to bolster the functionality offered by that HDMI port.

It's been a while for the M1330's core specification so I would hope to see it at the forefront of Montevina adoption, not least for being an XPS unit... and no Dell, painting it pink isn't classed as an 'upgrade'. :)

Oh thats bad news. It would have made an excellent addition to the M1330 to have a BluRay drive.
Anyone know why they left it off??

At the time it launched, the prevailing HD format was still anybodies guess, and I honestly don't recall there being any slot loading drives of either hi-def flavour until more recently.

The 1530's blu ray slot loading drive is slightly thicker than the 1330 dvd drive.. It might go in with a little effort, though.. I guess they couldn't find a blu ray drive thin enough..

HDMI is extremely useful on Samsung Plasma TVs. They have very limited resolutions on their classic analog VGA port - only 1024x768 which is not even 16:9. But with the HDMI port you'll obtain a lot more resolutions, and with 720p is quite OK.

    ^^^
That makes sense I guess - it does make connecting across a lot easier since it passes both video and audio I believe?

Do you get the cable with the M1330, or is it a seperate purchase?

Aside for Home Theater purposes, it is much easier to connect/disconnect an HDMI cable than a DVI cable, so for those who use this on a desk as well as while mobile, this is a tremendous convenience over either DVI or (shudder) Analog VGA.

A DVI to HDMI cable should be around $10 shipped, or better, from NewEgg, Monoprice or another reputable retailer.
