I found this post on the SD forums found at http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=231184&p=7277582&highlight=%40finduserid+__userid226614__#post7277582 Post #855
The Guy claims to be a Dell Employee and seems very legit to me...here is what he said in response to the M1330's (Might clear things up)
"for those of you curious, you can stop calling all my sales reps and customer service reps wanting to know where your computer is. there is a global shortage on the glass used to make the lcds, as well as a delay on the video cards. couple this with the unit being a new production model and you have a 30 business day lead time. while we got a limited supply of chassis' and other items to ship out a portion of the systems, there is still a pretty short supply causing the delays. just because your order says 'in production' does not mean we are actually building it. just means the manifest has been sent over to manufacturing and your method of payment has been approved. calling and canceling to replace the system with the idea that it will ship is not the best choice, you will only delay your order longer...
finally, the reason i was passing along the friendly advice about not calling to cancel items and downgrade is because those are the orders we are starting to cancel. we have a full order report of every system that cleared through the drake page and are canceling for those that are attempting to take even further advantage of the drake page system by downgrading and changing specs. this goes for several other schools, but drake was impacted the most. i am sure a few folks that initially got in on the deal can verify that we have canceled their orders and some on multiple occasions.
just let your systems be, stop calling the queues to ask about them, and wait another 3 or 4 weeks and everyone will be a whole lot happier."
Hope this helps clear some things up guys,
Dave

poor drake students...who had a legit discount.
-
I wonder if the BUILD status is actually legit then...
-
Yea poor students who really were ordering at a student discount, but might have been canceled because hundreds of complete jerk offs tried to fake it from this forum.
-
.

Perfect analogy would be getting priveleged access to a system that you DO NOT have priveleges for and taking advantage of whatever is inside/including stealing and screwing all the priveleged people out of their PRIVELEGES.
I hope everyone understands that you not only tried to save money when you had no right, but you also screwed it up for a lot of people that now have to suffer through long queues because Dell now has to go through every order to see who is legit. You're all scum. end of story. -
-
Yea I'm not gonna lie I'm still confused as ever, only now my expectations are a lot lower!
-
Seems like a pretty lame excuse. So why aren't we hearing about this shortage with other LCDs being made around the world? One would think that with the limited number of manufacturers of LCDs this would effect more than just the m1330.
-
Maybe its just a DELL global shortage... not sure though.
-
Yeah but Dell uses the same suppliers as everyone else. It just seems fishy to me. Like a made up excuse for really poor launch planning...
-
Well... I don't think I'm TOO surprised. I heard bad launches for the other XPS models as well... :-(
-
Yeah...
Mine is in build so I am optimistic that it will ship on time. However, if it doesn't ship by 8/1, I'm going to cancel and go to the Sony store and pick up an SZ or a TZ in August. -
-
Maybe the LED screens are different? Most other laptops don't have LED backlights.
-
I dont think this is just for this modeol. I was supposed to have a repalcement 1520 sent to me because they sent me one with a defective lcd panel and my replacement 1520 with the 1280 x 8-00 screen has also been delayed.
So I dont think this has to do with just this model .It probably affects every new model. -
Lets hope that Sony comes out with a Production date for the new Sz soon!!! Although th Sony is an antiquated system, Sony would unknowingly force Dells hand by forcing them to get the m1330' out alot quicker in fear of cancellations.
-
The LED shortage makes sense, since the Dell m1330 isn't the only 13.3" notebook with an LED screen. The Sony SZ and ASUS U3 also have a similar screen, if not the same one from the same manufacturer. The demand seems high!
-
gee, you guys, the poster with that bogus info is just a troll over at the SD... he is just intimidating everyone over there, so I'd take any of his/her info with a huge bag of salt... 'cause you know, his stories change with each post... besides, he ain't saying anything new, it was all posted on dell blog already, the only purpose of that post was to scare off SDers, not to inform anyone about anything.
-
I'd also note that the parts used in the XPS systems are top of the line... I doubt they'll be shipping out any bad LCD screens on their prize notebooks...
-
Well... i've waited for 2+ weeks (some have been waiting even longer) so they better be quality parts!!!
-
This person on slickdeals is a troll so don't trust the info
-
-
This person is definitely a troll. He first pretended to be a father of an incoming student and said to be computer illiterate.
I no doubt believe that this whole fiasco is a publicity stunt. They launched a new product, made some silly discount mistakes like the m1210, and have everyone talk about it til back to school. It definitely got my attention. -
Don't believe that post on slickdeals.
It's very simple..
Click on the user's (wakejunkie) previous posts and read a few --you'll see he's just a troll/fake trying to get attention. Definitely no reason to believe it. -
troll or not... all drake orders ordered with "false identity" should be cancelled!
-
and what is a troll anyways?

I don't know if the note is from an actually Dell employee but I bet Dell manufacturing employees are going through a big learning curve right now. They just launched a bunch of new notebooks and the manufacturing people are just now getting up to speed with all their models. Couple that with the fact that all of Dell's parts come from 3rd parties (aren't they just an assembler these days), I could see that lead times could become an issue because if Dell poorly projected demand then they wouldn't have a large enough inventory of parts--especially for the LED display since isn't this the first Dell laptop to offer LED backlight. Maybe having a 1420, 1520 or M1330 order not shipping until next month is a positive as it allows Dell to work out the kinks in system.
-
Although the MacBook Pros don't use 13.3" screens (they start at 15"), Appleinsider at http://www.appleinsider.com/article...to_meet_demand_for_new_led_lit_notebooks.html says that Apple is having trouble keeping up w/demand for the new gen MBPs with 15" LED backlit screens.
It also says "Apple representatives have reportedly identified the new 15-inch LED backlit display panels as the root of the problem. However they stopped short of indicating whether the holdup is a result of an ongoing quality issue or simply supply constraints associated with the relatively new display lighting technology." -
-
Ummm... for a computer company delays are very bad publicity. Look at how many people canceled Lenovo orders because of it. -
This does not just affect the 1330. The 1520's have the same delay and they uses different lcd's.
-
sesshomaru Suspended Disbelief!
I believe we'll be seeing some shippings soon. There might have been a shortage, but initial orders must start shipping tomorrow, unless they never had any LED screens to begin with. And the LCD orders should also be out tomorrow...
-
i do not believe this reason causing the delay. Basically what your telling me they are not capable of building one m1330, they dont have enough screens to build just one? I mean not one person around the world has recieved their order. There is something really wrong somewhere, and i'm pretty close to cancelling my order for a new sony sz6.
-
if my order gets delayed past the est ship date ill strongly consider going for the new SZ6 also if they are easily available at sony stores
-
sesshomaru Suspended Disbelief!
Well, so far my order's still on target to ship tomorrow.. I'll start fuming only if it doesn't.. Till then, no complaints.. Besides, for a new product, it still hasn't been 4 weeks since it has been launched. Most of this hysteria is not really helping anyone out, and unless the estimated delivery dates come and go, I believe we have little reason to complain.

As I mentioned, I don't think it is exclusively a parts problem. I bet Dell is having a hard time keeping up with the learning curve since it launched three new model lines at once--XPS, Inspiron and Vostro.
-

Learning curve? For a company of dell's turnover? It'd be a shame indeed.. But then with dell, you never know....

Speaking as one pretty deep in the IT world, I've been hearing about the nVidia shortage for a while. If you ordered the GeForce GO 8600M GT 256mb then that might be the cause of your delay. I think the GS models are in shortage too but I'm not sure. I haven't heard anything else anywhere else about an LCD shortage though and am a little slow to believe it. Other manufacturers are cranking out screens like there's no tomorrow so I'm a bit slow to believe it.
