Ever since I connected my new Microsoft bt 5000 mouse to my m1330, it's been having sleep and shutdown problems.
Basically, I've set my options so that when I close my lid, the computer is supposed to go to sleep.
Now, it only does this 50/50 of the time. Sometimes it just goes into this hibernation like state that is unresponsive. The computer is on, the screen is black, pressing the keys does nothing except get me that windows beep noise
So I'm forced to hold the power button to turn the computer off.

This caused a huge problem a few days ago, I closed my lid (assuming it would go to sleep) and then put my laptop in that m1330 case
2 hours later, I open the case up to find my laptop still on and SUPER HOT.
It scared the crap out of me. I was like OH NO. DANG. 2 hours stuffed in the case while it was on.

And as for the shutdown problem, sometimes my comp will shutdown, other times, it just stays on the "Shutting Down" screen forever.

Anyone else have this problem with their m1330?

    Sorta

Mine would go to sleep then randomly wake up. Sometimes it wakes up, then decides to hibernate.

    Very confusing.

    Really?
    Randomly wakes up?
If it wakes up in its case, it'll get baked like my poor laptop...:/

sounds like a Dell driver issues. Is this the Vista driver?

Wait.. Your m1330 knew how to go to sleep and wake up without ANY problems before the bluetooth mouse? Wow, you're lucky. My computer is forbidden to sleep. Heres why: before it'd try to go to sleep then go into a coma along the way. Other times it'd sleep, wake up then a bunch of stuff wouldn't work till it was rebooted.

    Ellianth, Yeah...that coma thing.
    I really hate it.
It's like a messed up hibernation.
The buttons are unresponsive, the screen is black, the computer is still on, and the only thing you can do is to force it off with the powerbutton.

    Vengance,
Yeah, I'm using vista too. I think it's a dell bluetooth and vista issue...I really hope this is fixed soon

Also, sometimes, my bluetooth mouse doesn't connect (after coming back from sleep when it does work) because somehow, the mouse disappears from the list of devices and when I look at the bluetooth hardware, the dell trumobile 355 bluetooth thing isn't there.

    Nizzy,

I'm guessing we have the same problem then...D:

I know there's a setting in the power options that prevents the system from going to sleep, and it was giving me a lot of trouble until I figured it out. Go to power options, choose your preferred configuration, pick advanced settings, and then under "When Sharing Media" in the multimedia settings category, make sure that neither the battery nor the AC power setting are "Allow computer to enter away mode." Away mode apparently hijacks any attempt to make the computer sleep by leaving the computer on, but disabling the mouse and keyboard. Not sure if this is your problem specifically, but it's worth checking out.

    Good luck!

    Nova,
    Oooh..that is interesting...
I'm guessing that setting deals with things such as...watching a movie? (not touching the computer for like 2 hours)

By default, the plugged in ac thing was on "allow coputer to enter away mode"
Now I've changed it to what the battery one which says "prevent idling to sleep"

I have no idea what that means but I'll see if this fixed anything

Funny thing is. "Away mode"...is there anyway to "come back"?
It seems like the computer is just locked down.

    Freelancer,

Apparently away mode is for shutting off the monitor/speakers/mouse/keyboard while sharing media with an external device like an Xbox 360 via Windows Media Center. When I attempted to bring my machine back from away mode, sometimes it worked and sometimes it just stayed locked down like you are describing. Does not seem like a very useful power option to me...

I have my multimedia settings on "Allow computer to sleep" for battery and "Prevent idling to sleep" for AC power. So far so good--no sleep problems yet.

Btw, how long does your system take to boot? Mine boots really fast so that's why I don't bother with sleep or hibernation or hybrid-sleep.

Mine takes about...30 seconds? Then logging in and loading everything takes another 20 seconds?
Around a minute to get my desktop fully loaded from power off

I've turned off a lot of programs that would normally be part of the startup sequence and I've also rearranged my boot files with tunexp 1.5
Check out the vista tweaks thread on this forum.

I like putting my comp to sleep because..I just close the lid and it sleeps within 20 seconds. And then it resumes within 2 seconds

I would say the slowest part of starting vista would be the loading everything after being logged in

    EDIT

    H/o guys.
I think my problem has been fixed.
I updated vista with the 1/22 update and the bluetooth problem seems to have gone away and the shutdown and the sleep problem..

I'll keep you guys posted if something goes wrong
I turned auto update off because there was an update on 1/8 which interferred with some dell drivers and caused my computer to get the blue screen of death again and again...
If you want to read about it, it's in this thread:

btw, thanks guys for all your responses

Not me. Of course I did not install any bluetooth software when I added my MS 5000 mouse. Just use the Vista driver. Plus I did a clean install of Vista when I first received my M1330.

Mine takes 10-15 to get into windows and then another 15 for the computer to be fully responsive. I haven't done any real tweaking either. I guess i'm just lucky XD. GO me!! *does a dance*

Do your USB devices work after the computer wakes up?

You need Microsoft hotfix KB929577. (Or Service Pack 1.)

I doubt if its bluetooth related. The only way to make sure is to uninstall the bluetooth drivers and let Windows install the default Microsoft drivers. If it still results in problems, try disabling the bluetooth in device manager and check.

In my case the culprit was Intel Matrix Storage Manager/Turbo Memory Driver. Read more at: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=209781

I went to windows update and updated all the stuff that came up.
That fixed this problem i was having. After I installed BT mouse (logitec) it just went to sleep at random times.

Now I haven't had it happen since the update. Not sure if it was related or not, but just to let you know my experience.

BTW, i got my M1330 last week.

There is definitely a problem like this caused by Bluetooth. It's addressed in the aforementioned hotfix (which Microsoft do not publish, but Dell include in their OS preload) and the forthcoming SP1.

You may be right, but if you read my story, you will see that I did a clean reinstall starting with Dell drivers (the latest one on the website) followed by the updates provided by Windows. I never had bluetooth relted issues although I have connected to a wide variety of bluetooth devices. My hibernation problem was directly related to Dell provided Intel Storage Matrix Driver/Intel Turbo Memory Driver/Application. Uninstalling them and reinstalling the Intel provided ones solved the problem.

I think I am lucky that I didn't face any bluetooth related issues.

I have an update on the situation.
So now, I've isolated the problem.
The whole sleep mode failing/hibernate failing occurs not randomly, it occurs whenever the laptop doesn't connect to the mouse.

Basically, sometimes, my m1330's bluetooth adapter icon doesn't show up in the system tray while other times it does.
When it doesn't show up, there's always a problem and the mouse doesn't connect.
Under the bluetooth devices window, the mouse isn't there and under the hardware tab, the dell bluetooth 355 thing isn't there either.

Other times, the icon might be there but it shows the same problem, ,the mouse doesn't connect, and theres no bluetooth hardware according to the bluetooth devices window

It just isn't stable at all.

Btw, if I click "search for bluetooth devices" when the bluetooth is messed up in either one of the two states above that I mentioned. It "searches" for like half a second and then the computer notifies me that it can't find anything bt devices.
This is not right because normally, my computer will spend 20 seconds searching for bt devices before telling me there aren't any...

    I'm waiting for SP1.
    Hopefully, that'll fix this

Earlier I was getting the bluetooth mouse issues you describe, when the computer woke up the bluetooth icon was missing and I would have to cycle the bluetooth off/on and re-find the mouse to get it to work again. I didn't have the problem yesterday, which got me to thinking, about the only thing I changed from yesterday to today was the power plan. The bluetooth problem doesn't seem to happen to me if i stay in "high performance" rather than "balanced."

    Go figure.

    Dave,

I don't know if the power plan would actually cause a difference. Maybe so.
Who knows, these issues are so confusing.

My computer has the issue no matter if it's in balanced, high performance, or power saver. The power setting doesn't affect it.

So I've uninstalled my mouse for now, just waiting for SP1.. lalala

Anyone have any update to this problem, SP1 didnt help, I still have the problem were my bluetooth indicator in the tray disappears after i hibernate, its really annoying and it seems the only way I can get it to connect again is by restarting the computer.....
