Someone/Anyone PLEASE HELP ME! I don't want to return this laptop for a replacement because everything else looks/works fine and im scared if i replace i might just end up with more issues
BUT this TICKING/SCRATCHING sound is driving me crazy! Can anyone please shed some on light to what may be causing this sound and if any solutions are known?

Does it sound like a hard drive? I always thought it was because Vista indexes things or something like that so its always doing that. I could have made that up though. I'm not really sure though.

It has to be either the HDD, DVD ROM or the FAN, because those are the only mechanical parts capable of making such a sound. Most likely the HDD (if the ticking is irregular) else the FAN (if it happens very quickly at a constant rate). You should be able to identify it by listening carefully. In either case you’ll have to contact DELL because none of those devices should make any abnormal loude ticking sounds.

However, some HDDs are nosier than others, and you can definitely hear the disk when it is being accessed. I`m assuming you are familiar with HDD sound.

This might help if its the hard drive
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=168425

My hard drive was making a ticking noise and that fix worked for me when I had the A06 bios, but strangely, it didn't work as well when I flashed down to A05...

The A05 bios also got rid of my CPU whine but made the southbridge whine for some reason. RM Clock stops both whines though so my m1330 is more or less silent now

Thanks, I called dell and they had me run all those tests. Even though the tests passed they said something is wrong with the HDD and they are sending me a replacement.
They said that should fix it
    Thanks!

WOW! That worked! It drastically reduced that sound! It still does it every few minutes but nothing like before! THANK YOU!
Now is this good for the computer? Should i call dell and tell them not to send the new HDD??
They said the new HDD they want to send will be imaged to the one i have now BUT a different company NOT Seagate which apparently has this problem.

So my question is ..... Is it better to have a HHD that doesn't make that noise to begin with or am i better off letting this program control it and stop it from making that noise? OR is there no difference between the 2?

It might be my imagination but i think the fans are running longer and louder since i installed the program and put the HDD settings on maximum like the thread said i should do

    Thanks!

I have a constant tick sound like a clock around the fan area. As it is not loud, I have to put my ear very close to my laptop to hear that...So this one is the fan one, right? (I have SSD) If it is not loud, should I still ask the XPS guy for fan exchange?

I had the same ticking noise on my Vostro 1500.. I read it's a sort of power management of the HD.. but with the NHC program I was able to fix it.. gosh it was so annoying, especially in a quiet room.. Sometimes when I'm running on battery I have to deal with it because there is a 30min difference in battery life between the ticking sound setting and the max HD performance (which is the setting that eliminates the ticking sound).

I can usually fix the ticking noise by simply switching to max performance then switching it back to enable spin down or whatever. Just fiddling with that option usually causes the ticking to become less frequent until I restart again, although I haven't tested if the battery life is still affected.

As for the replacement hard drive, I see no harm in trying out a new one, especially since you already have one on its way. If it doesn't have the noise then there nothing worry about and if it does, maybe NHC can fix this one. I have two m1330 right now since one's an exchange and unfortunately both of the hard drives have the ticking noise.

Be sure to tell us if your new hard drive makes the ticking noise or not. I might get Dell to send me one as well if it doesn't.

IF you're running Vista it's normal to hear clicking.

    Heres help to trouble shoot.
    - It can be a bomb
    - Hard drive
    - Fan
    - CD-Rom
    - Hinges - if you are changing the angle of your monitor constantly.

The first few, weeks/months Vista indexes everything. Frankly I turn it off, just a waste I never search I got everything organized. But that's me.

After so, it's normal to hear some clicks - as thats the heads parking. Getting ready for a fall and such.

But if you feel that you want a new hard drive, it's only a phone call away.
