Unlike other threads which state their notebook cannot come out of hibernation, my notebook cannot go into hibernation. Whenever I hibernate, it just locks up the computer (Lock here means the same things that happens when you press Win Key + L). I changed Password Protection on Wakeup to Don't require a password and now the notebook just continues to in the Desktop screen without hibernating. It is as if I haven't done anything. Sleep and Shutdown work fine.
The system was working fine with factory install but this problems seem to have cropped up after I reinstalled the OS. I have tried only Dell's drivers and let Windows Update update to the latest versions. I even tried LaptopVideo2Go's drivers for the nVidia video card but the problem persists. Currently the notebook has the latest drivers installed by Windows Update.
How can I find out which driver, utility or application is causing this issue? How do I resolve this issue?
Problem Solved
I disabled all non-microsoft startup programs and services and checked Event Viewer and found Error for volmgr.
I proceeded to uninstall the following Dell Drivers I had installed during the initial installation of the OS:
R154200.EXE (Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver 7.0.0.1020 A02)
R154164.EXE (Intel Turbo Memory Driver 1.0.0.1082 A00)
R154200.EXE (Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver 7.0.0.1020 A02)
I then installed the following Intel drivers:
Intel Matrix Storage Manager 7.6.0.1011
Intel Turbo Memory 1.5.0.1013
My notebook now works perfectly and there are no issues with sleep or hibernation.

You may need to ensure that Hibernation is enabled. Look up enabling hibernation in the Windows Help and Support.

How do I find out which driver is causing the problem? -
Unfortunately the only sure way that I know of is to reinstall windows, testing hibernation after every program and driver. It takes time but will give you a solid picture of what is causing it.

have you tried calling dell tech support. You should call them before reinstalling windows

You might also try deleting the hiber file and making a new one.
Right-click on your C drive, select properties, Disk Cleanup. Select the option to clean the hibernation file. Once you nuke it, reboot and run this command in a CMD prompt
powercfg -h on
Try it again
If it still doesn't work, set the bios back to defaults and use a standard power plan.
Lastly, make sure you have the Dell chipset drivers installed. Hibernation can be tricky when the USB devices go to sleep.

Do you have the Intel x3100 graphics option? If so, the most recent driver from Intel screws up hibernate. Try downloading the one posted at support.dell.com - fixed hibernate on a clean install of Vista for me.

Have your checked the 'Event Viewer' and/or the 'Problem Reports & Solutions' areas under Vista to see if it narrows down exactly what's causing the failure?
