I just bought an M1330 with the 64gb SSD.

This is the first time that I've bought a "big name" laptop (Dell, HP, etc). Typically I buy generics like Sager since they typically use more standard parts. But this time, I wanted small, light, and fast! And boy did I get it...

However, I want to run Vista x64 instead of Vista 32-bit. I've found that the drivers and such are available so I am not worried there.

I notice that there is a D: drive called "RECOVERY" with some odds and ends on it. Not sure what that is all about.

Right now, I have the SSD connected to my main PC here and I have Ghost8 doing a sector copy of the disk itself using the -IR switch. This will grab everything on the disk (partition table, boot sector, etc).

My question is, once this is done and I repartition the drive and load Vista x64, will the M1330 behave like a normal laptop without barking at me for deleting that 10gb "recovery" partition? (I realize if I go back, I'll need to restore the Ghost8 image back to the drive. That's no problem.)

Does this sound like a reasonable plan? Perhaps it's overkill as I did receive an "OS recovery" CD from Dell, and another with seemingly necessary components to restore the laptop to its "factory state". I just don't know if the data on that recovery partition is something I have on a CD or not...

Any input would be much appreciated!

EDIT: Oh yes, the laptop is very fast. It's a loaded one. 4GB RAM, 64GB SSD, LED, etc. Got it from the Dell outlet for over $1500 less than new. Go Dell!

Your laptop will not miss the Recovery partition.

Usually the Dell provided CD's are for doing a "clean" install of your OS. The Recovery partition provides a "factory state" image, with all the unnecessary Dell provided Bloatware. So no - it's not the same as you get with the CD's.

If your laptop has the "MediaDirect" button there are some specific formatting issues you need to be aware of. You can check out the threads on "MediaDirect" and the Guides to formatting Dell laptops.
