I have an XPS m1330 which I bought off ebay. When going to control panel, under system it says

    manufacturer Dell

    model inpiron m1330

what does this mean? Shouldn't it say XPS?

What exactly do you mean? DELL sell it as a XPS, so why call it an Inspiron?

Anyways, model and other OEM information is stored in the registry, and you can change it if you want. Look under : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OEMInformation

It should NOT be called an Inspiron, and my replacement does say that as well. Inspirons are $1000 machines, give or take. XPS are $2000 machines, give or take.

Based on its build quality, the M1330 is more deserving of the Inspiron moniker than a high-end one like XPS, but if Dell would have called this the Inspiron 730M, it would be selling for $500-$1000 less than they managed to sell it for under the XPS name, so, obviously, they threw in an HDMI port and an extra headphone jack, and called it an XPS.

BTW, my replacement has the CPU whine (and I believe Dell already loaded A06 BIOS), wobbles with a 6 cell battery, and the left hinge gap is even bigger than my original. On the plus side. the Toshiba 2306 is even nicer than the original 2306 I had, and the Hard Drive clicking is gone thanks to my new Maxtor (7200 RPM) drive.

hmm XPS was a subbrand of the Dimension label. All consumer branding has been replaced to Inspiron. Hence XPS is now a subbrand of Inspiron. See it as the performance line, or Type-R on cars.....

    A non issue.........

That's not how Dell advertises it on their web site. They used to have an "Inspiron XPS", but soon broke it off to form its own line.

I only pointed out that the XPS is, in fact, its own line, and, therefore, should read XPS M1330 in System Properties, and not Inspiron M1330.

I did not cry about it, though while on the subject of Inspiron vs. XPS, I noted that XPS is a premium brand, whereas Inspiron is basic, and, due to the accompanying price and expected quality differences between the two lines, Dell should not interchange the terms XPS and Inspiron arbitrarily.

Incidentally, if you bought a Lexus and the nameplate on the trunk said Toyota on it, would you say, "Oh, Lexus is Toyota, so it's OK", or would you say "WTH? This is a Lexus, not a Toyota"?

    Peace.

And how many times in a day do you look at the Sys Properties screen?

You must leave it on your screen all day for it to bother you this much.

Mine could say "Jiffy Pop" for all I care. It doesn't impact the performance of the laptop. The only problem it creates is when anally retentive people get their panties in a twist.

Get over it! There's more important things to be upset over!
