I like to know if it's somewhat future proof as in I can upgrade the CPU later on to something with a bigger FSB and Cache.
Thanks

I believe its socket 478m.. Correct me if im wrong.
-
The T5550 is socket P.
Note that upgrading your CPU will void your warranty with Dell. -
It's socket P. There is no such thing as socket 478m.

There is socket 478 (pentium 4), 479 (pentium m), M (core duo/core 2 duo/pentium Dual core) and P (core 2 duo/pentium Dual core), all with 478 pins.
Socket 478m is an unofficial name, made by users. -
So, with the 5550, whats the CPU's I can upgrade to?
I know it'll void the warrenty, but seeing as I only have a 1 year warrenty, I won't be doing it for a while yet. -
Anything that uses Socket p and fits the TDP of your XPS. Up to T9500.
Everything here that uses Socket P.
go for one of these: T7250, T7300, T7500, T7700, T7800, T8100, T8300, T9300, T9500. -
Thanks.
Oh and one more thing, TDP? Thermal Design Power?
I'm new to Notebook, but just to be clear, all the processors you mention will work with my M1330 TDP? -
You're welcom. If I can recomend one, go for a T8100, T8300 or T9300.

I've always been a computer moder, but has always been with Towered computers. should be interesting when the time comes to upgrade.
+1 Rep for you -
IT's not too hard, at least for those I've dissasembled (some Asus's and some Fujitsu Siemens's). Dell has instructions. And unless dell has a sticker that says "Warrant void if removed", I think your warrant will be ok, so long as you don't break anything while removing and installing the cpu, and the fault isn't the CPU's, you'll be fine.

can I upgrade a T7100 to something newer ?
-
Yes you can
M1330 with T5550, is it Socket P?
