Does anyone know if Dell offers student discounts? And if they do, does anyone know if the student discounts apply to the XPS line, specifically the M1330?

Yes, and the discount ranges from 3% to 12% depending on the warranty and price that you choose for the notebook.

I have to say that I am a little confused about this whole discount-with-warranty thing. True you get a larger discount with a longer warranty, but aren't you paying more for the extended service anyway? How is it still a discount then?

I think the student/employee discounts really only end up being "discounts" to the extent that you can get the same machine, for around the same price as you would get from the Dell Home store or a little bit lower, but end up with more warranty and Dell service coverage for that price. Makes sense that Dell would throw that bone to students since they are highly reliant on their laptops for class work and so forth.

To check this out, I priced the same system twice, once with the 1-year warranty (6% discount) and once with the 3-year warranty (12% discount). After tax, the 1-year costs $1767.XX and the 3-year $1851.XX. So, the conclusion is that you get 2 more years on your warranty, 3 years of accidental coverage, a 3-year antivirus subscription, twice the online backup space, and a 1-year automated tuneup for only $84. Not bad at all.

Also, they have 12-months free financing today on all XPS models. I'm not 100% sure the m1330 is the machine for me (still trying to figure out if I can live with a glossy screen), but will order tonight because of this deal. Worst case, I decide in a week I don't want it and should have plenty of time to cancel since they aren't shipping for quite some time.

In case anyone is still looking there is a 5% stackable coupon on the delluniversity.com site right now. It's stackable with your student discount so you end up saving a lot. Especially once you add in offers available on the site.
