it comes down to 3 things. footprint/weight, screen size, screen resolution.
footprint/weight: the 140 will have a slightly smaller footprint and weigh a little less than the 6000
screen size: depending on your preference, the 140 "only" has a 14" widescreen and the 6000 has a 15.4" widescreen. note that the 140 has the option of TRUELIFE while the 6000 does not.
screen resolution: again, depending on your preference, the 140 "only" comes with WXGA. the 6000 is configurable with WXGA, WSXGA, WUXGA.
if you want smaller and lighter and are happy with WXGA, the 140 is probably good for you. if you want a bigger screen and/or a higher resolution, the 6000 is what you want. -
Indeed. I agree with drumfu. Performance wise, you will notice nearly 0 difference between the two machines (unless you opt for the i6000 w/ dedicated graphics: i6000d - but that might be slightly over your budget when it is all said and done (well maybe not, US gets some mighty nice coupons).
Comes down to size. Although there isn't a HUGE difference in size between the m140 (14" screen) and i6000 (15.4"), if you plan to carry the machine around daily, I would recommend the m140 over the i6000 just b/c in my opinion, the i6000 is bit too large to lug around daily. (Comes down to personal preference).
However, I (and many others on this site) are waiting on a review of the m140 vs i6000 comparison before we can truly determine the chasis/size of the m410 in respect to other competitors.
If you get a chance to see both machines in person, that will definately help you in your decision-making process. -

Yea well i think im going to go with a m140. I read a couple of places GMA graphics isnt as bad as it seems, you just have to turn down some settings.
thanks for all the help! -
Yeah the M140 is a very good choice and you should be happy with it. Its newer and is almost considered a gaming laptop since its on the XPS line, again, you will be pleased. Trust me...
-
Let us know how it goes if you end up getting the M140.

This is no gaming notebook. -
More of a 'media powerhouse' according to Dell. So I assume the DVD's and picture viewing will somehow be better on this machine than others because?.....
-
I would definitely go with an Inspiron 6000D over the m140, why? the 6000D would have a 15.4 inch widescreen and you can get the ati x300 video card which gives you a more powerful dedicated graphics card and a chance of upgrading it if dell offers a better card, the m140 ONLY HAS INTEGRATED GRAPHICS which means you are stuck forever with that card, the ati x300 will work alot better and is capable of light gaming so definitely go with the INspiron 6000D which is not very much bigger than the m140 but performs better. -

I'm interested customizing the XPS M140 with the 7200rpm hard drive, but doesn't $300 for the upgrade seem a bit steep? Too bad they don't offer a 60GB option b/c that would probably be a lot cheaper. Anyways, do you guys think it's worth it?
-
I don't personally think that is worth it. First off, don't plan to use the M140 for anything REALLY intensive (ie. Game modding, intense 3-D animations), thus, I don't know why you'd require a 7200rpm HD in the first place. BUT, make certain it is 5400rpm and you'll be happy with it forsure.
$300 doesn't justify a HD upgrade (either GB [size] OR RPM [speed])
