Well, I just got an XPS M1530 for Christmas and it's been running great so far. I've been using it a lot since I got it trying to find out what it can do. However, I was using it earlier today and shut it down because I went out to eat. Now when I came back, it doesn't start. If I press the power button, nothing happens. I've tried with it plugged in, with the battery, plugged in without the battery and it doesn't do anything. Anything I should try before I send it back to Dell?

What were you doing before you shut it down? Did anyone else touch your laptop when you went out to eat?

Sounds bad im not going to lie.

Are you holding the power button?

Im not sure if there are any procedures int he manual but try that. Download it from Dell in PDF & search the document.

FYI - with my laptop on XP is that if i close my laptop lid it will send the primary & only desktop to my external monitor when attahed.

When I open the laptop lid the external monitor will flicker but stay as the primary desktop, my laptop monitor stays blank, this goes away when i open & close the lid once more.

Nobody else would've been home to touch it. Before I shut it down I was just browsing the internet.

It was completely shut down, and I didn't have an external monitor attached. It's not just that the screen is blank, when I press the power button, the light doesn't even come on. Just plugging the power adapter in doesn't light up the battery charging light either :(

Is the battery charged? If not, check your ac adapter...maybe its messed up.
Otherwise, i'd suggest send it back to dell.
I had a similar situation, then i realized that my powerpin[powerjack] was broken (another laptop). I fixed it by taping it tight to my laptop...with duct tape.

The display on the battery indicates that it's fully charged, and I've tried the AC adapter both with and without the battery in the laptop...nothing. Guess it's back to Dell and I'm laptopless for the foreseeable future. I just don't understand how it could just go from working perfectly to not even powering on.

Try the Media Direct button, see if that yields any results.

Is there ANY type of feedback after pushing the button? Visual feedback? Audible feedback?

Nope...nothing. Buttons don't light up. I don't hear the fan or hard drive start up. Don't hear the CD drive make its normal startup noises. Monitor doesn't come on. None of the LED indicators come on. The charging light for the battery doesn't even come on if the adapter is just plugged in.

Sounds like it's a motherboard problem. The power supply may have went bad.

Maybe you could let it sit tonight without messing with it anymore, and if it doesn't work in the morning, give Dell a ring.

Yea I don't really feel like calling Dell tonight, so I'll just let it sit. Should I leave the battery in it or take it out?

this is a new laptop so your warantee will take care of it but it's a pain. You most likely have to send it back to them to be fixed.
    I think it's the Motherboard...
this is why I got 3 year warantee..

I have some questions about the process involved in sending my laptop back for a new one.

    1) Tell me if I'm wrong here, but I think basically all I have to do is call Dell, tell them it's not working, they'll probably walk me through some basic troubleshooting I've already done, then agree to exchange it for another one.

    2) In exchanging the laptop, will they send me a new one and I send mine back in the box that it came? Or will I have to repack it back in the original box they sent to me?

    3) Do I need to send back the other stuff that came with it like the manual and power adapter or just the actual laptop itself?

    4) Can I keep the hard drive I have now so I don't have to reinstall Windows or copy over my files again?

I dont know if this ever works put you can try that power surge thing.

Take out the battery and the ac adaptor, press the power buttom for 5 secounds and put the ac adaptor back on and see if it turns on.

Well, after letting the laptop sit overnight it still wasn't working today. So, I called Dell and they wanted to send a technician out to replace the motherboard. However, I'm wondering if I should just return the laptop, get the money back, and reorder it. Because of the discounts, I could get the same specs, but with the bigger 250gb hard drive, and a 3 year warranty for $1380, which is about what I paid the first time. At the same time, I'd just like the laptop working again as soon as possible...

If you really need the laptop NOW, then just get the mobo replaced.

If time isn't a factor, return and reorder.

    1) Yes!

    2) They will send you a new one, then at a later date (After you have received the replacement) they will arrange for a courier to come and collect the faulty one. Just repack it EXACTLY like it was when you got it, and repack everything that came with it (apart from optional extras, like bluetooth mice, etc).

    3) everything goes back, because they will give you new stuff

    4) you should be able to just swap it over, and they wont even know! But just ask when you call them to be sure that its ok...should be fine tho!
