I purchased an M1530 on clearance from Best Buy for $540 about a few weeks ago. I absolutely love it.

I have upgraded the memory to 4GB and installed Vista Ultimate 64bit.

I was wondering if there is any chance that I can upgrade the processor?

    The build I have is:

T5450 1.66GHz Processor (Socket P from what I've read online)
CPUZ says its the Dell 0XR509 motherboard with a GM965 chipset w/ latest A08 firmware
    160GB SATA HDD
    8400M GS Graphics card
    2.0MP webcam
    802.11abgn wifi card
    biometric fingerprint reader

I know that some T7xxx series processors as well as the new T8xxx/T9xxx series processors are Socket P just like the T5450 I am running, but I dont know if this laptop / moterhboard would be able to handle them.

Any advice or help is much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Scott

You can upgrade the processor to a fast penryn. If your going to i'd advise the T9300 ( 2.5ghz 6mb L2 Cache..) Because once you start looking higher you have to pay around $200 for around a 0.1ghz change to T9500.

A word of warning, I think i'm right in saying it will void your warranty, however I'm not 100% on it so you'd have to ring dell and ask.

I've talked to a lot of HP/Dell case managers and all those big high up people. The customer service reps all say it'll void the warranty. According to case managers, they have no way of telling if you've opened it. IF you DAMAGE something by opening it, THEN you void the warranty.

Anyways, yeah as everyone else said, and is going to say, you can upgrade to the current penryn processors.

In general, there's no real need to upgrade your processor unless you need the extra processing power. That being said, if you need upgrade now, the T9300 is a very good choice. If not, you should seriously hold off for a while, the new Penryns will only drop in price and you'll be able to pick one up for much less in the future.

I believe the usual policy for warranties is that a modification will void your warranty only if it is the source of whatever problem you may encounter. Not sure if this applies to all parts, though.

I know for a fact that they wont fix it if the original parts arent installed. Its a in the limited warranty service policy

Yes you can upgrade it, but seriously, do you even need to upgrade it? What are you going to use the laptop for?

Ah thanks, I just wasn't sure if the laptop would be able to handle the new 45nm chips with the 800Mhz bus.

I bought the Best Buy 2 year non-accidental warranty on the laptop. As long as what I do during my upgrade isnt what breaks the laptop, the Best Buy warranty is still good.

You can just put back the original processor just before you send it in for a warranty service

T9300 is your best deal at this moment, although it seems to be on shortage right now. I know for a fact that some people are selling engineering samples (ES) of X9000 at the same price as the T9300, you may want to check it out.

You should know though, that ES processors usually have heat problems because they are, well, engineering samples and are incomplete (in a way). And the X9000 won't give you more boost than a T9300 due to other bottlenecks in your system.

How do you like the Vista Ultimate 64bits? Is it worth doing? I have friend that will give me one.

I don't see any advantage to getting a faster cpu... but I see it has been pretty well covered here.

You can keep the old CPU and if something went wrong with your laptop, you can put the old CPU back on. Problem with warranty is solved.

I dont know about upgrading the processor to the T9300. I was on the dell site and tried to upgrade the processor to the T9300 with your video card and it stated that they were not compatible. It needs to be the 8600gt to take the T9300. Does anyone think otherwise?

I have vista ultimate x64 on both my laptop and my desktop.

Runs great. I do alot with high definition video editing... but even normal usage runs faster. For example, RAR files seems to extract much faster with vista 64 than when I ran vista 32.
