How long will the M1530 be able to handle next-gen games like Crysis, at 1200 x 800, with medium-high settings, at decent FPS (30+)?
    If I configure it with
    - Intel Core 2 Dou T7800 processor: (2.60GHz, 4M L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
    - 4GB 667MHz DDR2 RAM (DUAL CHANNEL)
    - 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT, DDR3
    - 7200 RPM SATA-II hard drive
    - 15.4 inch LCD: (1680x1050)
    - Windows Vista Ultimate: (32 or 64-bit, which ever is better for gaming)

    Thanks in advance.

I mean how many years will it be able to play these games at the desired specs. Not how far into the game. But thanks for the info anyway

Two other things. First, what quality are the touch pad buttons on the M1530, when you press them are they smooth, or are they very stiff and make clicking noises. Second, I understand that the M1530 can play media with booting up, does that include Itunes videos and music? Or only DvD/Blu-ray discs?

    The M1530 won't play Crysis.

Yeah, it meets the minimum requirements, it'll 'run', but honestly, it sucks so bad it's not worth it. At medium settings, and 1680x1050, the framerate will drop into the low teens (or below) every time something happens onscreen.

It'll be better on 'low' but looks so bad there's no point. And you could lower the res, but you might as well smear butter on your eyes it'll be so blurry. I hate non-native resolutions on LCDs and don't know how anyone can tolerate them.

Forget about Crysis. Play it on your desktop, or the next generation laptop you buy. The M1530 can't handle it.

Before anyone says 'Oh, Crysis looks real smooth at 15-20fps!'....it doesnt. I have a M1530, have tried Crysis, it's pointless. Don't bother.

    Three things.
    1) You need new drivers
    2) You need to lower the resolution and up the overclocking
    3) You probably ordered your 1530 with the 8400m gs, or all your other components suck.

I play Crysis with almost all high and still get 18-28 FPS.

You're incorrect on all three points. My drivers are fine (i've used ALL the beta drivers at some point, 169.04, .09, .28 etc), my card is a 8600M, my spec doesn't 'suck', it's higher than yours. I'm aware of the o/c potential of the 8600M and imo it's foolish to push a laptop gpu to extreme levels for the sake of a few FPS on a game that isn't even that good.

My point/opinion is that Crysis doesn't play 'well' on a machine of this level. 18FPS is not playable, and certainly not smooth imo. And ditto for low-res, playing at 800x600 (or any low resolution) on a 1440x900 screen looks absolutely horrible to my eyes. Crysis on M1530 = pointless

You may disagree, and that's fine.

Would Crysis be more playable if I got a lower native resolution - 1200 x 800, or 1440 x 900. Also, how much of a performance boots would OCing the 8600GT give.

No laptop without a Geforce 8800 is going to play Crysis well... you'll have to turn down the settings so much that the main appeal of Crysis (its graphics) won't be there.

Does overclocking the CPU and GPU damage the laptop, due to heat? And does OCing void the warranty?

Yes it will more than likely shorten the life of your machine. thats not to say it isn't worth it though.

Does it void the warranty. If not, then Dell will have to replace my machine if it "burns out" within 3 years.

If it overheats and Dell find out it has been overclocked it will void the warranty.

Links to prove that m1530's die sooner?
Graphics hardware is built to cope with high temperatures, unless you intentionally block vents, there will be no problem.

    Wrong.

Wrong, med settings + res with a config tweak is more than playable on a 8600m gt

Latest drivers for crysis are the 169.44, overclocking can give a large performance boost when combined with the latest drivers.
I can run crysis on my 1720 at 1440x900 med settings + config tweak with reasonably smooth fps from 20-40.

Not as fun as 1920x1200, high settings +2x aa on my desktop but it's still great fun.

Overclocking does indeed void your warranty however they cannot find out if the unit has been overclocked as it is done through software.

not everyone will play crysis on high resolution and maxed settings...running the game on medium settings is just fine with 1280x800 or 1400x900 res

Whats the impact of mods on m1530 Crysis? I read in the gaming forum that people really enhance performance with things like (iirc) Natural Mod.
