    Hey,
I have a M1530 for about a week now. I really like the laptop and all but i have one thing that really anoys me! It gets really hot at the place where you place your left handpalm next to the touchpad. It gets that hot that i have to take it off once in a while because my hand just gets to warm! Is this normal or should i contact Dell about this ?

The temps of the components look totally normal (this screenshot is taken after the laptop is running for about 1-2hours)

I guess its a matter of perception. Mine, just like yours, will get warmer on the left palm rest. However, for me, I find the amount of heat absolutely bearable. In fact, I would only call it "bit wam". Certainly nothing to make me remove my hand.

Maybe the 320GB HD generates more heat than mine. Is your notebook well ventilated (ie: not on a bed or sth)?

Then i guess i was right. The 320GB seems to run hotter then mine (250GB 7200). Sorry to hear that its making you uncomfortable. Maybe you could invest in a cooling pad and see if that makes a difference? Or have a small portable fan blowing air over it, next to you, when you are using it for long periods?

The problem (after seeing it when I took my laptop apart) is that dell is using the palm rest as a giant heat sink, there's like a metal block that extends from the palm rest to the hard drive so the heat from the drive is transferred the the palm rest. This might've been to reduce flex on the palm rest but it's also transferring heat.

From what I heard, Seagates tend to generate lot of heat while Hitatchi doesn't. I don't know if that is true. So I take it with grain of salt.

It's the other way around for me, Hitachies run a lot warmer than my seagates and are louder as well, but their great performance makes up for that.

Well if it's getting too hot to touch you should contact Dell about this, they are really serious with safety issues and will not hesitate in assisting you.

I had a 160GB 5400RPM Fujitsu in mine, then it started getting bad sectors and getting really hot. I called Dell and they sent me out a new hard drive, 200GB 7200RPM Toshiba. It's much cooler. The 5400RPM one wasn't warm at all at first, though. It was only after it went bad that it started getting hot.

Again, as someone above said, it may just be a perception issue.

I have the 7200RPM 250GB, and it gets warm, but nothing I would call hot.

It seems to be pretty normal for your drive. If you feel it is really a problem, contact Dell. They seem to have no problem sending out new hard drives.

    Good luck.
