:) I'm new here and I want to thank all those who have posted some very informative threads concerning the new Dell M1530. I recently made a purchase from the Dell Outlet:

    Black, T7500, 2Gb Ram, Nvidia 8600GT, 200GB-7200rpm, 4965wireless, 355bluetooth.

The weak link is the screen resolution @ 1280x800.

Thanks to all the positive feedback concerning the LG LP154we2 LCD, the choice is simple as to which screen to choose when upgrading to 1680x1050 resolution.

The upgrade is under $250 for a new LG screen, and of course, that does not include installation (I'll do it myself.)

Buying the M1530 from the outlet gives zero choices when it comes to being selective about a particular brand of hardware configuration, the trade-off is getting the most bang for the buck. So I can spend extra $'s after I receive the system and upgrade what I want and not what Dell wants to sell me.

Anyway, my question is: Will I have to change the cable for the LCD when I go from the generic Dell installed 1280x800 lcd screen to the new 1680x1050 LG brand screen specified for the M1530?

Any replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again to all of you for the cool and useful information! :D

I don't think so, I'm pretty sure that all single channel LVDS cables have the same connector. You can probably ask the seller if it is compatible with the connection in the M1530.

Remember that by upgrading the display, you may have to run many new games scaled to 1280x800 for them to run smoothly.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Well, most sellers only know about selling and not so much about the products they represent; especially something as specific as cable compatibility. Most of the distributors suggest replacing the same resolution display with the same resolution...hinting that the cable may burn up.

Common sense tells me that Dell wouldn't have many different cables in their inventory, but then that is why I'm asking for help here...I don't know for sure and so far I can't seem to get a absolute answer, whether being yes or no. I would think that if the connectors were the same then everything would work just fine.

I'm not so concerned about running games as I am about high-end 3-d CAD software...so I need the extra resolution on large 3-D models.

I'll keep searching for the answer and when I discover something definite I'll post my findings. I'm sure there are a lot of other DIY'ers out there.

For any of those M1530 owners out there who are considering upgrading the screen resolution. I purchased an LG LP154WE2 (1680 x 1050) resolution screen. The model was a direct replacement for the M1530. It was easy to install and everything from the brackets to the cable ends all transfered without any problems. I have never replaced a laptop monitor until now, and it didn't take more than about an hour...most of the time I spent just making sure. I will have to say that the most time was spent remoing the cable ends from the old screen. They are very small and there is adhesive tape to keep things in place...I was careful to remove the adhesive, it is very strong for what it has to do.

Anyway, after I reassembled everything, I booted up the computer. No problems, came right up...and then I set the display to the max resolution. Wow!!!! 1680 x 1050 is the way to go and the LG monitor is beautiful. Dell should have done it right in the first place.

If I can do it, you can do it. It has been a week, with absolutely no problems, and I haven't had to call Dell's Tech support for anything. The M1530 manual is available online and it gives a pretty good description of the R & R procedure...although, like usual, I short-cutted the instructions...and saved several steps of disassembly.

Hi, I bought the screen on ebay. The same people have their own website online. When I bought the screen, it was actually cheaper on ebay, but now it costs more. So I would suggest going directly online. The exact LG screen is LP154WE2(TL)(B2). Just search for this part number by lowest price. It comes with the inverter. You should be able to buy it new for about $240 plus shipping. If you get the Samsung screen with your m1530, chances are you end up with the grainy screen, you have to crank the brightness way up...and that just sux the life out of a battery and still looks like crap. I sent one back with the Samsung. I kept one with a Chinese brand screen, which wasn't grainy. But I wanted more resolution and figured I'd be better off keeping what I had and buying the screen I wanted rather than forking over mo-money to Dell...they wanted over $400 for the LG screen. Oh, but when I told them I could get it for less than $250 it was like they couldn't say a word, so basically I told them they weren't getting mo-money from me...LOL. They did offer to send one of their geeks over to install it and I said I'd take care of it...best part is that I did it for free. If you go for the screen and install it yourself just take your time...basically, you just have to remove the faceplate, which is very fragile, then unscrew the screen brackets, lay it upside down on the keyboard and take your ever-loving time being ever-so-careful to remove cable ends...with the adhesive that Dell probably gets from NASCAR...a very sharp knife and very small movements help, cut only the adhesive and nothing else. Transfer the cable and the mounting brackets to the new screen and re-install. Not much to it...The Dell manual takes you through a teardown that is more than what is necessary. Do what you want and feel comfortable with. It is scary at first...just take your time. Good luck!
