I have an m1710 with the 1.83 ghz processor and I followed the instructions on here to reformat and all, but since then, Ive noticed that one core runs at 1.83 while the other seems to run at 988 mhz quite a bit, and will only ever so often revert to 1.83. Im just wondering if that is normal and if I should worry.

I believe that is normal. It's a power saving feature.

There's no reason to worry. Speedstep monitors the need for the processors and runs them at different clocks accordingly.

I presume you're speaking of what you see when you click My Computer->Properties. Your processor only runs at 1.83GHz across each core when it's used. When it's not used, SpeedStep downclocks it to 998MHz to save on power and keep heat low.

Ok thanks for the information, that had me worried. This lappy does seem to run hot alot of the time tho, even with good ventalation. Im wondering if that has anything to do with the Dell recall of Lappy batteries?

it would be best for you to get some temp monitoring app so you have hard numbers to go by rather than going with "it feels hot". this way, if it IS outside of normal operating temps, you will know it as a fact and can take steps to remedy the problem (if there is one).

I have one the Dell Inspiron/Lattitude Temp mon. or whatever its called, also a cooler of sorts, that raises the lappy up a bit so its not really touching the surface of where I put it, gets adequate breathing room. It usually runs from 27c and sometimes jumps to 41, not when playing games either. Also runs alot louder than when I got it.

well, the only things that move on your computer are the fan(s) and the hard drive. i would hope that the HD isn't already going (i would assume it'd be at least 3-4 years before that started happening).

if it's the fans, maybe you need to get in there and clean out the dust?

Yeah I was thinking that, Ive only had it about 3 weeks, is there a certain frequency with which I should clean the inside out?

Here is the fan and temp controlling software, on my machine it has the monitor for everyhing, i.e., cpu, gpu, chipset, HD, and other stuff. It works great!
