Wanted to receive some input prior to calling the XPS Support group....

    My display is a:

LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, WU, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC., GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, LG PHILIPS LCD, V2

    This is a TrueLife LCD.

    Symptom:

About a week ago I noticed the left side of the screen was darker than the rest. The dark band extends out about 2.5 inches. I have read this may be due to lamp failure. Is this accurate? When the lappie is first powered up, the display is fine. After about 15 mins it begins to darken on the left side.

Is a replacement covered by the warranty? I purchased the XPS Tech Support/Complete Care/Next Business Day extended warranty when I purchased the system.

If it's not covered, is there something else I can report to have them change it out?

    Thanks for any input.

If you plug in an external display does the same thing happen on it? If not, the problem is definitely with the LCD itself. Since it only dims one side, I'm not sure if that'd be the lamp, inverter, or something else in the LCD. As long as it wasn't caused by physical or water damage, that should be a covered repair. I checked Dell's warranty page and couldn't find special restrictions for LCD repairs, so I believe you'd be alright reporting the issue as is, so long as it only appears on the LCD itself. If you attach an external display and the problem occurs on it as well, that may be a video card problem, which probably still needs to be serviced and should also be a warrantied repair.
