I have an M4300 with the WUXGA screen, native resolution of 1920x1200, when connecting an external monitor (AL2416W 1920x1200) the laptop changes the screen resolution down to 1600x1200 and doesn't offer a choice of 1920x1200, it goes from 1600x1200 to 1920x1440.

This problem exists with the original video driver supplied and the newer version as available from Dell's support site. Changing the driver has no effect on this problem.

The machine does this whether the monitor is connected directly to VGA port on the back or connected using a port replicator. What is interesting is if I set my display properties to share (or clone) the displays then I can run my external monitor in its native resolution. The problem with this option is that I have to leave the lid open on my laptop and I see no need to have the laptop display running, also in my office (because of where I dock it) this means clients and coworkers can see my screen - something I don't want...

Anyone else here with an M4300 using an external monitor? I'm wondering if I have a bad system or?

    Thanks,

    Larry

I am not sure it is capable of driving both monitors at that (high) of a resolution.

    Hi Larry,

    We have the same issue.

We have used Dell laptops for years and never had an issue. Now we cant use dual screen when carrying out a presentation.

Dell have informed us its an issue with the FX 360M graphics card / Driver.

Did you ever manage to get a resolution.

    Thanks
