Is anyone else here running a MR9600 stock config with Counter-Strike Source? I'm running an i8600 at 1280x768 and after a while of playing, my FPS will drop to 18-20fps for a few minutes and return to normal. I'm not quite sure what's causing it, but I suspect a heat issue because it happens after extended play. Is the MR9600 known to throttle back when it gets too hot? Has anyone else experienced this?

    My config:
    i8600 Pentium M 2.0 Dothan
    1.2GB RAM
    ATI MR9600 Pro Turbo

When the slowdown happens, I switched out to check the processes running to see if another program was hogging CPU, but I saw none. Switching back in still yields the 18-20 fps until it decides to go back to normal.

Will do. Thanks for the advice. I'll come back with what I find.

Run fangui in observer mode to check gpu temps during slow down. i normally run fangui on fast, fast settings, while playing games to avoid heating issues . . . good luck!

Here are graphs with explanations of what happened when it slowed down. Ignore the numbers, all I did was scroll the graphs back.

First occurance. Huge dip in CPU usage is when I switched out to check the stats.

Second occurance. I waited a little while it was slow, and then popped out to check the temps.

Third occurance. I just waited for it to speed up again.

I have the exact same problem.. Same symptoms, and I wait a while for it to go away..

I think it's a heat issue too.. I have an 8600b.. I'll try to force the fan on full blast while playing hl2 to see if that helps..

Hmm.. Maybe we can figure out how to strap a peltier junction on the 9600 then ;-)

I'm going to be doing the GPU mod to my i8600 when the parts come in. It's said to drop the GPU temp from 100 to roughly 60-70 on high loads.

check the box for enabling the control of the fans, and crank them both to high. then play the game, and see if the amount of time before you experience a problem increases.

^I've already done that. There is no difference; the fans are always on high when I'm in game.

after looking around, many others are complaining about this.

some suggest more ram, faster disk, and the gpu mod have helped.

if we assume it might not be the video card, you could use the performance monitor (located under administration tools) to log the cpu usage, disk-io, swap, ram, ram assigned to the cs process id, etc..

if you do run this, set it to log, perhaps every 2 seconds (i'm assuming the slow down lasts > 2 seconds).
