I don't know if I'm going to switch 100% to PC. Will use both for right now.
    I paid $1363 before taxes.

The whole Mac / PC "debate" is something I always found interesting. Some use one, some the other, some both. Neither is wrong or right, but it does come down to use and preference.

I used PC's exclusively until I got my MacBook, used that for about a year exclusively (except work), then now i'm back on a PC. Mac is with the wife now, and all is well in the world once again.

Just a random thought, but thought i'd share anyway.

haha I was soo close to buying a macbook pro this summer, but once I saw what Dell had to offer I couldnt resist. The comp I ordered is about the exact same specs as the Mbp but a 256mb graphics card, larger hard drive, and about $400 less. Oh, and a 3 year warranty! :)

    $400?

I had myself with a config exactly the same as the Macbook Pro most expensive model with a three year warranty, accident protection and lo jack for $1,500, and best I could possibly get on the Mac was $2,200, and that's $700.

Of course, this includes educational discounts, etc.

Im in Canada so for a macbook pro we get: $200 off for student discount + free 4gb ipod (which Id sell for $200 or so)= $400 off the $2199 starting price= $1799 before taxes

My Vostro 1500 before taxes was like just over $1400 (but including 3 year warranty...return to depot, not complete care)

and the Macbook pro I was looking at was the cheapest...because they are soo expensive!!!

I am not sure why nobody has mentioned this yet, but the macbook pro uses much faster memory for their graphics card than the memory used for the graphics card in the dell 1520. If you don't play a lot of games then it's not a big deal, but the macbook pro will have more resell value for sure.

I did this in another thread for someone who was saying the MBP was cheaper - but it sort of applies in this case as well.

    MBP: $1999CAD
    Nano: $229CAD
    Subtotal: $2228
    +taxes (I'm in ON so 14% ;) = $2539.92
    - $229 MIR for Nano = $2310.92
Sell Nano for $200 or so = $2110

In comparison, your configuration of $1363 + taxes would be ~$1554 so a $556CAD savings.

their graphics cards are ddr3 instead of ddr2 yes, but a 256mb ddr2 card will still be more powerful than a 128mb ddr3...and both will be good for gaming

My buddy has a Macbook Pro 17" with pretty much the same specs as my 1720 (4GB RAM, 256MB NVidia 8600M GT, 1920x1200 WUXGA)

    The differences:
    - Macbook Pro uses DDR3 RAM for graphics card (so faster than Dell)
    - Macbook Pro has LED backlit screen. Dell is standard LCD (though it looks great on my 1720)
    - 1720 has a numpad
    - 1720 has 2 hard drive bays
    - 1720 has higher res camera I believe (not 100% sure on this one)
    - 1720 has one more USB port
    - 1720 is hundreds of dollars cheaper (varies, but it's at least $400-ish less)

I wish the Dell had the LED screen and DDR3 memory for the graphics card, but honestly, I am very happy with it.

My Macbook friend dual boots with Vista and OS X, and when running in Vista we both play EverQuest II at maximum graphics settings and they run about the same on both our machines. Second Life is the same...both laptops run them equally well at maximum settings.

The 17" MBP does not have an LED backlit display, only the 15" ones do.

No it won't. That's like saying that a huge dump truck is better used for an ambulance than a normal ambulance because while it's slow, it can carry more.

Ummm...maybe lowered textured games but if you want to run a game with alot on screen and really high detail, the extra ram with outperform even with ddr2...

Macs have higher resell value because they start out alot more expensive. Looking at Ebay seems like G5 macs sell for 50-60% of their original value, about the same for a Windows PC.
