The sleeve that I received with my dell m1330 has a magnetic closure. Is anyone concerned about having a magnet that close to the hard disk? I suppose it's probably not a big deal given that the hard disk is located off to the side, inches away, and the magnet is weak.

The scientist in my says I'm probably not going to erase my data, but the worrywart in me gets concerned everytime I open the magnetic latch.

    Any thoughts on this?

Mine doesn't feel like it holds at all, the magnet must be really weak.

With a weak magnet like that, you would have to rub the magnet directly over the HDD to ruin it.

I've never heard of anyone's hard drive actually being ruined by a magnet. If you use common sense (ie not place your notebook next to a gigantic electromagnet), you should be fine.

It is something that you hear occasionally to be a problem, but I know of no cases where someone's laptop was suddenly wiped by one. Some countries, such as Sony and Apple, actually use magnetic clasps on their lids so it would be safe to assume that it requires a fairly strong magnet. I still wouldn't be sticking fridge magnets to your laptop, but a common sense approach should mean it's safe enough.

I think your paranoia is getting the best of you. That magnet deleting data off your hard drive will be the day pigs learn to fly.

Even fridge magnets probably aren't strong enough to erase, I'm not saying it should be tested though :D

I was screwing round with a neodymium magnet from a hard drive once and realised I was using next to my external, and everything was fine.

There is also a magnet on the bezel of the screen. It's a Hall Effect switch for detecting the closure of the lid. You scientist (your paranoia) in you should have been worry about that too.

I wouldn't expect them to but if anyone tries this and loses 3 months work then it was your idea not mine :p.

You would think that Dell would give you a sleeve that would ruin your laptop?

Don't kid yourself......some people would go as far as using this as an excuse why something happened to their laptop in the hopes of getting a new one.

It's truly amazing the lengths some people will go to in order to screw Dell over.
