    Hello.

    I own this dell studio 1558, i5-520, 4gb ram, 500gb 7200rpm, ati 5470,

so far really pleased with it.

I've been playing games like left 4 dead 2 without problems.

now I'm trying Medal of Honor (2010), medium to high settings, and getting average GPU temp around 90º Celsius (as reported by gpu-z).

is it safe to play with this temps?

I could get the settings to low - medium, but the game looks really badly then.

    idle at 48º Celsius.

What resolution screen do you have?

Edit : and yes that temp is normal unfortunately

It's a 15.6", but I'm not sure how that's relevant to his question?

My desktop ATI cards ran 110C load and were fine. 90C is rather hot though, especially in the confines of a notebook chassis. If you have warranty left I wouldn't worry about it.

Because if their playing the games at 1080p (if native res is 1080p) they could possibly drop the res in game and it wouldnt push the GPU as hard.

sadly, dell didn't offer 1080p screen on studio 15 here in spain.

    And I'm playing in 800x600, mid-high settings.

will try 1024x768, low-mid settings and see if it gets any better.

Then you think I shouldn't worry as long as I've got warranty left...

my first own laptop, I'm student, you know, I don't want to burn it :D

Just keep the dust out of it and well ventilated while gaming

I get a max GPU temperature of 87 degrees - this while playing BF bad company 2 on High. So, is it normal for a notebook to get to this temp while gaming? or is it damaging ??

it stays around 48 - 54 while normal usage (web browsing etc).

Also, do you think I need a cooling pad - does it make a difference? At the moment I do use one but it is a metal pad which simply elevates (very little around 1cm) and does not have a Fan.

i have a cooler master notepal, with a fan directly blowing air into my air intake of the computer, and i can safely say it makes no difference what so ever to the gpu gaming temperatues

The room (ambient) temp is the main factor here.

If your gaming in a room thats 85 degrees Fara and im gaming in a room thats only 75 degrees fara.

your system is going to run much hotter than mine.

It makes minimal difference since there is no fan for GPU, the fan we have is for CPUs and they remain quite cool around 60 C.

I play Starcraft 2 and the GPU get around 80-85 C. I have a cooling pad but I do not see it making any difference, it just cools the area under the touch pad only.

    EDIT:
I used HWMonitor and found that the high it was hitting during the game was around 98 deg C. Ouch.
My warranty just finished so I have my finger crossed. I wish there is a way to undervolt it so it runs cooler. Btw, I have the lates 11.4 ATI driver.
