I bought my E1705 with only one gig of RAM in it and I'm really regretting it now that I'm trying to play BioShock. I'm wanting to upgrade, but I'm not sure which route to go, and I don't remember what the max amount of RAM is.

I thought I read somewhere of people trying to put 4gigs in their E1705 and it only recognizing 3 of the 4 gigs. Is this true?

I was thinking of getting a 2gig stick of RAM and keeping one of my 512MB's in their with it for a total of 2.5 gigs. And then later on, I could get another 2 gig stick when it was more affordable for me. Or only get a 1 gig if that's all my laptop will recognize.

    Does anyone know?

    Thank you.

i don't know what the max amount of ram is, but the fact that only 3GB out of 4 is recognised, only has to do with a 32 bit OS being installed
if you install 4 GB, you'll need a 64bit OS to recognise all 4 GB

Windows will see a little bit more than 3 GB. If you want to get a 2GB stick and add 2 or 1GB stick later, that would work. However, 2GB total would probably keep you set for quite a while. Why not get 2x1GB sticks and save some money?

According to your manual, you have a 2GB limit. Adding more than that will not be recognized. This is due to the motherboard, not the OS.

I was worried my max was only 2 gigs. I couldn't remember if it was or not. 2 gigs will still be good. Since I can't go any higher, I guess I will get 2 - 1 gig sticks and save some money.

As Kaosfury pointed out , the manual says maximum 2GB.

I received 4 sticks of this today:

    Transcend 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory - Retail

    = $98.99 / 2GB stick

    LAPTOP #1 & #2: DELL e1705 (x2)
    BIOS: A09
OS: Windows Media Center 2005 (rollup2)
    RAM: TRANSCEND 2 x 2GB STICK = 4GB (3.25GB Addressed by OS & BIOS / 4GB visable by PCWizard 2007).
VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA QUADRO FX 3500M 512mb (x2)

    LAPTOP #3: DELL 9400 (x1)
    BIOS: A08
    OS: XP PRO SP2
    RAM: TRANSCEND 1 x 2GB STICK + 1x 1GB STICK= 3GB (3GB Addressed by OS & BIOS / 3GB visable by PCWizard 2007).
VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA GO 7800 GTX 256mb

You can address up to 3.25GB of ram via 2 sticks of 2GB ram(4GB total).

    Or,

    You can address 3GB ram via (1 x 1GB + 1 x 2GB = 3GB).

I have not been able to address the full 4GB....until I use the 64bit O.S.

Best of luck...for under a $100.00 for 2GB stick...you'll have permagrin soon enough?
