I just installed McAfee and I can tell that my computer is noticeably slower... Is this always the case or should is there some way I can change the settings to make it better?

Ah, you did not do your research and is learning about the blunders of using McFeces! By itself, and short of turning every single setting off, there's no way of making McFeces run faster. The only option, and is the most belated one for many, is to remove McFeces completely and get a different internet security suite. McFeces, since the 07 version, is a big resource hogs that make out politician look like runway models. It will suck up everything you have and slow everything that you would like to run. Try Avast, Trendmicro or Kaspersky instead.

You can uninstall it, and the computer will be (nearly) the same. Just run CCleaner and clean the registry. I use Avast! Free, but I love NOD32. It uses way little resources.
