Hi, I got a brand new inspiron 1505. internal modem works fine. but when i used cdma cell phone to connect, the xp stop responding, mouse and keyboard not respond at all, the screen just freezed, i left it for two hours and it still freeze with dialing dialog.

I believe it is because it use dial up modem script, but since it works on my old celeron laptop, it makes me confused.

i would appreciate if anyone has a hint or a light.

    Thanks everybody.

Have you been able to reboot it? If not, try holding the power button and it should shut down, and then you can hit the power button again to reboot it. If that doesn't work, you can always unplug the battery and the a/c adapter.

Was this the first time that this happened? It might have just been a freak accident or something. Also have you reformatted XP? You might have had too many processes running in the background.

Yes, i can reboot with power button but the problem remains everytime i connect with cell phone thru usb cable.

I know i can try to install xp pro later since my old laptop is xp pro. but this is just a wierd problem since the screen just get freezed, keyboard and mouse just stop responding (except power button).

is this xp media center problem and where should i ask about this? dell or microsoft?

You'll have to ask Dell, since Microsoft doesn't provide support for OEM versions. What phone and cable are you trying to use? What make/model is your old laptop?

like Keg said, you'll have to ask Dell but i'm not 100% if they will help you or not. This is not something that is covered under warranty usually, so they might want to charge you for the help.

I am using Nokia 2115i with DKU-5 cable. my old laptop is ASUS A1F, i tried this connection with several PC and laptop and everything is okay, except with my new dell. i suspect it is a media center or windows security update but i don't know. i will try to install xp pro later this week. a bit sorry, since i thought media center is newer and better.

have to do the old way. Thanks for your opinion guyz.

technically, you shouldn't have any problems with the OS. XP MCE is the same as XP Pro minus the domain features and add the entertainment features. I don't see why that would cause a problem.

Let's go through the basics. Have you reformatted? Have you updated XP and are you using the current drivers for your software?

Ok, an update for this problem.

I have installed XP pro on my inspiron 1505, but the problem still occurred.

The modem is ok since It works on my other laptop, my home PC, and my office PC.

I even try Vista Beta 2 on my inspiron but the problem still occurred. so I conclude that:

It is dell laptop problem not OS right???

But I really want to pinpoint what cause of this problem.

I have changed the BIOS setting (disable dual processor) with no luck.

Nokia modem is just using unimodem (universal modem) which available on all Windows OS.

if there is somebody can give me a light i will really appreciate and you will be named on my prayers :)

    Thanks.

it does not make sense that it is a hardware problem because the only "hardware" you're using is the usb port on the computer.

    i'm 99% positive it's a software conflict.

did you install anything on top of the fresh xp pro installation?

yes, that is what i think.

i installed the usb cable driver and nokia modem on a fresh xp install. the modem can connect but xp just get freeze after that. keyboard and mouse not respond, and have to turn off the laptop using power button.

it happen with XP media center, XP pro and The same problem arise with Vista Beta 2. That is why i think it is not the OS.

The modem works with my asus laptop, in fact i am writing this post with this modem on asus laptop.

    What should I do?

    Thanks

this problem is solved. not dell to blame. it was the usb cable. for some reason the cable doesn't work either on dual core machine or p4 with HT support, so I think the CPU hog and compete with the usb to get access to the bus. I don't know for sure.

anyway, i am using CA-42 instead DKU-5. thanks for everyone's help.
