Do you have Media Direct 2 or 3?
Both can play .avi's, it just depends on what codec the .avi requires. -
i have 3, i think its xvid or something

Any anwer for this? I launch Media Direct and point to an AVI. I hear the sound play but I get the message "unable to play this file".
I've installed the AC3 codec, Xvid codec, and Divx codec. Anything else need installing or is Media Direct just good for playing DVD's?
UPDATE: I got the answer from Dell Tech Support. Media Direct will not play files with any of the above mentioned codecs. The tech admitted that Media Direct is way behind the times, as most standalone DVD players nowadays recognize DivX or Xvid. There are "plans" to update MD for better functionality, but no release date set yet. For now, it's pretty much useless to me. If I wanted to carry around a bunch of retail DVDs, I would have bought a portable DVD player. So I'll just use VLC within Windows to play my AVIs.
