We've had a few threads on how to configure iTunes so you can use your media buttons when itunes is not active.
I found a solution last night (courtesy of Dell's forums). You can download this plugin:
http://www.aqua-soft.org/board/showthread.php?t=38334
Click on the red/yellow image "Multi-plugin 2.4"
After you install this plugin, open iTunes. Under the menu --> edit --> preferences --> Multi Plugin Tab --> Compatibility Tab --> check "fix media keys functionality" and select "mode 2" in the menu.

i love how the media buttons work automatically for winamp. that's nice for all you itunes users though.
-
so you have to actually install something to allow the itunes to work with the media buttons. but its good to know that they have a way to do it now. good job SouthernGirl

Thanks SG

Thanks. ^^;

Your welcome. The plugin works great. The only thing that I noticed about it which I don't know if this was so much the plug-in's fault, but when i was downloading something, and the download stopped, I couldn't get the advanced-->check for purchased music to work.

So far this work way better than I thout it would. The only problem I had with it was during installation of the plugin Norton decided it was a malicious program and decided to block internet access for plug-in updates. Dell included the disk for Norten Internet Security 2006. Its been a few years since I've used norton so I decided to give it a go thinking maybe it doesn't suck as bad and yep, Norton still sucks. I've been meaning to take it off an install Zone Alarm.

Additional note. Sorry for double posting. I've noticed that if for some reason you have Windows Media Player, and ITunes up(or Both minimize anyways) (Often I use both at once. Use WMP for streaming audio. With Itunes up but inactive. I tend to pause WMA at times, then listen to music on ITunes, then comeback to WMA afterward.) Both will respond to the media buttons at the same time. Thats annoying. ><;

SG how do you know stuff like this....you're amazing!!
-
Amber, looks like u've got a new admirer -
its called spending countless hours (and I do mean countless) searching the web for stuff like this. I do research on laptop policies, problems, and problems that are posted in dell.
I don't normally have WMP and iTunes up at teh same time, but it does make sense. I highly doubt there is any solution to it except for closing one of the programs. WMP is automatically defaulted to work with the media buttons, so I doubt there is some kind of control that you could adjust on it.

Awesome!!!! Thanks For The Great Post!!!
-
it won't read my music..someone please tell me how this works..i added the folders from itunes and my music and it won't read them and won't let me rid them either...
-
What exactly did you do? This is just a plugin for itunes, so all you have to do is download and run it (it installs itself), then open iTunes. ITunes will look a bit different in the menu section, but still should be the same as it was before.
-
oh lol, this has nothing to do with Media Direct? I don't get what this does then....
-
but when i go to Media Direct, it doesn't let me add music folders to it, it has them on it but says they are unable to read..
-
LOL, yeah MediaDirect is a completely separate thing.
If you are using ITunes, then this plug in allows you to use your media buttons to change songs, stop/play, etc. If you don't install the plugin, then you can only change the songs, stop/play, etc when ITunes is on your active window (meaning you have to click on Itunes every time you want to change songs).

I have a Dell XPS M140 (630M) and I thought this iTunes plug in would be amazing, since my MediaDirect button could now work!
But, I am still having issues with the compatibility modes in the Multi Plugin config, I have tried Mode 1,2,3,4 and none fix the 'media direct button.'
Rather, I get a message from Dell QuickSet saying that Dell Media Direct failed to launch. I tried closing Dell QuickSet and still the same issue.
Am I missing something? -

In XP, you can choose whatever you want to play your music. When you press the MD button, you'll still be forced to use WMP though. -
Holy Thread Resurrection Batman!!!!!
Yeah I know!!!
I thought I would give this thread a little bumpity bump for those who cant find the search button and are also to afraid to ask.
I just installed this with iTunes 7 on my E1505 running media center and it works great. Make sure to select mode 2 and it works perfectly.
Thanks SG for the great find. -

On this subject, does anyone know if you can get the media buttons to work with Napster when it is minimized?
-
I just installed itunes 7.4.2.4 and it wont work with that!! Does anyone no something that will work with the new i tunes!
-
Any updates as to what will work with iTunes 7.5 ?
-
All you need is this file in your plug-ins directory: http://www.hostfile.org/mmKeys.dll
In Vista, the directory is: C:\Users\<USER NAME>\appdata\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins
This works with iTunes 7.6. -
very good tanx
-
Ok, so just installed this on my 1330 and now itunes won't work!!!!
-
I made the same error too.. not realizing the thread was from 2006!
Just reinstall iTunes. Your music won't go away. -
Thanks! Moderators - please remove this thread or alert folks that the procedure here WILL NOT work for vista.
-
Weird. After uninstalling and re-installing itunes, the media buttons now work with itunes minimized and another tray active. What do ya know!
-
doing the mmkeys thing works, thanks!
