I am upgrading the hard drive in my Inspiron E1505 / 6400 and want to preserve the quick-start MediaDirect function. Dell sent me disks for version 3.0 but I have seen references to workarounds to install versions 3.3 and 3.5. I am wondering whether anyone can provide a quick explanation of the differences between any of these versions and whether it is worth the trouble to try and manually install 3.3 or 3.5 onto my laptop.

    thanks,
    Walter

    FYI,

I went ahead and installed the 3.0 version that Dell sent me. The program automatically downloaded some updates and then I ran the update option manually and got a second download. After that, MD shows that it is version 4.7.x.x (as a Windows program and when running in direct mode.) So, I am glad I didn't waste time trying to shoehorn 3.3. or 3.5 onto the machine.

The only real difference I see from version 2 is the Instant Office feature that was added in 3.0. I have heard that blu-ray support is in this version of the software but I will have to see if I can get a blu-ray player working in my laptop before I can play with that.

p.s., I basically followed Dell's instructions to install Mediadirect on the new drive but I used Norton Ghost to restore Windows XP from the old hard drive, data files and all, rather than reinstall the OS from scratch. I had to tell Ghost not to restore the Master Boot Record from the old disk. I also deleted the old version of Mediadirect before doing the installation of the new version in Windows.
