So I was having problems with my MediaDirect. The program will boot up but I can't play any DVDs. I figured that I could download the repair CD application from their website and create a boot CD (at least that is what is in their instructions).

Can someone tell me how to do this? It gets downloaded as an ISO file and I can't seem to make it into a boot CD. For now, when I open the file it goes to my default burner application (I think it's Roxio). I've tried copying the file as data and used the "Make Bootable" option but neither worked.

Do I need to download a different application? Or should I just call up Dell and get the CD from them? I was hoping to create the CD so that I wouldn't have to call Dell or wait for them to send it.

    Thanks for any help.

From what Dell usually ships with their systems there should be a program that you can burn ISO files to a CD with no problem. See what Dell came shipped with to see if there is a solution there. I would think Roxio would have that capability.

Have you tried just formatting the CD for drag and drop. Do that and drag and drop the iso file to the cd. Close the CD out. Restart the with the cd in the drive. At the Dell screen hit your "F12" button. You have to be quick by the way!!!! Arrow down to highlight "boot from cd". Hit enter to boot from the cd. Let it do its thing until you get to a dos like screen. Once there type in at the prompt "cd\MD2" and hit enter. Once your at the next prompt type in "Repair". The Media Direct Repair utility will open and you should be able to walk thru the steps on screen of how to repair your Media Direct. When you get to the "DONE" screen remove the cd from your drive and turn your laptop off. You can now start using media direct.

If your system came with a reinstall disc for Sonic CinePlayer, that is the reinstall disc for media direct. Just reinstall that and it should fix it, it worked for me after a windows reformat.

please check out the format guide sticky which gives you directs on how to make a MD repairable disc.

From the sounds of it, it doesn't sound like you need to repair the MD. Have you installed Cyberlink PowerDVD? Do you get any errors when you try to play MD?

    Thanks for the advice.

I haven't installed PowerDVD or anythign else like that. I don't get any errors...it just doesn't load up any of my DVDs. I also can't go into the Help or the Settings file.

I will try the directions that you provided. Thanks again. That was exactly what I was looking for.

The reason that it is not playing DVDs is because you don't have a dvd decoder. XP can't play DVDs naturally. You have to install the software for it - which is Cyberlink PowerDVD. You can call Dell's Tech Support and request this disc from them for free.

Hmmm...but the weird thing is that I could play DVDs beforehand. I played about 3 DVDs and all of a sudden it won't work anymore. It stopped working after I closed the lid of my laptop (so it went into standby or whatever) and then when I went back in to MD, it wouldn't play DVDs anymore. Sorry that I didn't explain that clearly before.

I think that Cyberlink PowerDVD is already installed, but for some reason, it won't play DVDs anymore. I will first try to do the repair disc and if it still doesn't work, then I will ask Dell for everything I need to get it to work again.

Yes, I can play DVDs in XP.

No, MediaDirect does not play any types of media files at all.

I am going to try the repair CD today. If that still doesn't fix it, guess I'll give Dell a call.

Sounds close to the problem I am having... Can you play DVD's in Dell Media Experience? When I load MediaDirect none of the bottons work.... I click on DVD, Picture, Video, Music, Settings, or Help nothing happens at all... SouthernChild and I have been trying to work this out but no luck. I have tryed reinstalling DME, MD, PowerDVD, Quicktoos, everything and nothing is working. The only difference we are having is that I cannot play DVD's in PowerDVD either... I have checked for dirvers and I have all the right drivers... I just requested a new HD from Dell and I will keep you updated on how that works out.

Yeah...that's exactly the same problem that I am having. When I click on any of the buttons nothing works. The only thing that works is the Exit button. It loads up fine and exits fine, but doesn't play anything.

I can however play DVDs Dell Media Experience. I can launch Media Experience using the MD button when Windows is booted and can use all of the MD buttons (e.g. Play/Pause, Stop, etc).

    Definitely keep me updated. Thanks.

It doesn't work. Mitchell tried that. Basically that just deletes your data and searches your computer again for all of your music/pictures
